The big fight in 4 timelines - a complete analysis of the time travel and plot logic of the Terminator series

The biggest role of 5 is not to "close the timeline", "make up for loopholes" and so on. In fact, before 5, the timeline of Terminator was extremely simple - so simple that it did not even involve parallel time and space, 123 was a story on a timeline.

It was not until the appearance of 5 that the time and space of this series became enriched.

So far, there are 4 known timelines in the Terminator series:

T0 - the original unaltered timeline

This is an invisible timeline that never appears in the work (but we can figure it out). There has never been a terminator in the history of this timeline. John Connor's father is not Kyle Reese, he is just an excellent warrior who grew up in the doomsday wasteland. By fate, he will become the leader of mankind and lead the rebel army to defeat Skynet. . At the end of T0, Skynet sent the T800 back to 1984, and Kyle Reese returned to 1984. In T0, John Connor didn't know that Kyle Reese was going to be his father, so Kyle Reese had no special knowledge of Sarah Connor. In T0, Judgment Day occurs in 1997.

T1 - the only timeline for a long time.

As T800 and Kyleris crossed successively in T0, the timeline changed accordingly, resulting in T1, and the story of Terminator 1 began. In this timeline, Terminators and Resistance fighters emerged in Los Angeles in 1984. Since there's nothing special about Kyle Reese in T0 (in other words, whoever John Connor sends back to 1984, he'll be John's father), we see that in Terminator 1, Kyle Reese isn't " Approach Sarah Connor with Purpose". Obviously, T0 and T1 are not the same timeline, and the fundamental reason is that the dates of Judgment Day on the two timelines are different. In fact, the biggest marker that distinguishes the different timelines in the Terminator franchise is Judgment Day. T0 is 1997, T1 is 2007, we can see later, there is also T2 in Terminator 5, the judgment day of T2 is in 2017, 10 years apart from each other, maybe it is some kind of bad taste of the director(s).

At the end of Terminator 1, T800 was eliminated, but T1 did not end, but moved forward naturally. John Connor was born and was trained according to the mold of future human leaders. By 1994, T1000 and T800 appeared in Los Angeles. Here begins the story of Terminator 2.

At the end of Terminator 2, T1000 was eliminated and T800 self-destructed. Due to the death of a black scientist, Skynet research progress was delayed, which is also a sign that T1 is different from T0. In 1997, Judgment Day didn't come, Sarah Connor died of cancer, and John Connor continued to grow until 2007, here in Terminator 3.

Note that it is still at T1 until here. Aside from T0, which never officially appeared, and Terminator 4, which is equivalent to a rumor, the entire Terminator series has been running on a single timeline, which is also a proof of its simplicity. In Terminator 3, the TX and T850 appeared in 2007, and finally Skynet came online, Judgment Day came, and John Connor began his road to salvation.

The last is the end of the T1 timeline, where three groups of events occurred successively: T800+Kyleris back to 1984; T1000+T800 back to 1994; TX+ (completed by the assassination of John Connor) T850 back to 2007. In this timeline, John Connor eventually dies in an assassination attempt.

And then comes the point: Here's a very important point, where will T1's Kyle Reese be back in 1984 in Los Angeles?

It can't be T0, there is no Kyle Reese on the T0 timeline.

It is even less likely to be T1 (that is, the logical closed loop that many people think), because in 1984 of T1, "that" Kyle Reese came from T0, he did not know that he was John Connor's father - and Kyle Reese in T1 Just know. So, when T1's Kyle Reese goes back to 1984, there will be two of him in Los Angeles, which doesn't fit the history of T1 itself.

T2 - The Fallen John Connor

So when T1's Kyle Reese travels back in time, a new timeline opens up with it. Of course, this new (inevitable) timeline T2 was also not involved in the first 4 stories.

The story of T2 is very similar to that of T1 (because it also has Kyle Reese's first push). The only difference is that Judgment Day in T2 didn't happen in 2007, but in 2017 (which is why Kyle Reese in Terminator 5 is moving to 2017 instead of 1997). At the end of the T2 story, T800 and Kyle Reese (note that this Kyle Reese is the "indigenous" of T2, not the one who crossed over in T1, the one who crossed over died in 1984) went to 1984, but John Connor was attacked by Skynet, It was transformed into a T3000, and it also crossed. From here, what happens is the plot in Terminator 5. The crossed "this" Kyle Reese is the character in Terminator 5.

For the same reason, this Kyleris cannot go back to T1 or T2. A new timeline opens up.

T3 - A Future Without Judgment Day

The vast majority of Terminator 5's story takes place in T3.

In T3, in 1973, T800 "Daddy" from (?) rescued young Sarah Connor from T1000 and raised her from then on. Many people have the same question by now: where the fuck are you from?

In fact, according to the similarities and differences of the above T0-T2 timelines, we can know the plot of this hidden easter egg.

Going back to just now, we said that the biggest basis for distinguishing several different timelines is when Judgment Day occurs. In Terminator 5, when Sarah Connor, Kyle Reese and Papa are in 1984 Los Angeles and are going to the future, they have an argument: Sarah Connor is going to 1997 and Kyle Reese is going to 2017 .

Apparently, Sarah Connor's knowledge of the "future" came entirely from Papa, who told her Judgment Day would come in 1997 - no more, Papa from T1. Therefore, at the end of T1, it is not three groups of crossings, but four groups: in addition to the three groups mentioned above, there are also T800 "Dad" + another T1000, who will go to Los Angeles in 1973 to execute "kill" respectively. "Dead Sarah Connor" and "Protect Sarah Connor" quests. However, none of T0-T2 had their presence in the history, and T3 was born from it.

In the timeline of T3, Sarah Connor was trained to be a real female man, and in 1984, T800, Kyle Reese, and T1000 followed one after another - "I've been waiting for you for a long time." Then, Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese (hope you remember where he's from) goes to 2017, Dad stays in the flow of time and grows old alone. I think this is the most tear-jerking episode in Terminator 5. You complained that you didn't see me right away after crossing - no idea I waited 33 years for this.

In 2017, business as usual, the world was neither destroyed in 1997 nor in 2007. John Connor was not born in 1984. Young "native" Kyle Reese grew up healthy. As the trio prepare to sabotage Skynet's plans, the attacked John Connor awaits them in T2. Like Kyle Reese, John Connor "T3000" couldn't go to T0-T2, so he also came to T3 and met his "parents" in 2017. Of course, strictly speaking, these two people are not his parents, his real parents, Kyle Reese from T1, Sarah Connor from T2; and the two people in front of them, Kyle Reese from T2, Sarah Connor from T2 T3 - admitting wrong parents is so embarrassing sometimes, don't blame them for being ruthless when they kill you.

Then there is the story of the second half of Terminator 5. At the end of the story, Cybertron was blown up again (why say it again), and Judgment Day was stopped once again. However, according to the setting of "Judgment Day can only be postponed again and again", it will come eventually (the end credits show that Skynet has not been destroyed), but that is part 6.

One more thing, about the origin of the father.

One might think that Sarah Connor is going to 1997, which means Daddy told her Judgment Day is in 1997, which in turn indicates that Daddy is from T0. Actually not so.

One obvious piece of evidence is that Papa knew that Kyle Reese was going to have John Connor with her, and if Papa was from T0, he couldn't have known this information (John's biological father in T0 wasn't even Kyle Reese).

Judgment Day in T1 is in 2007, since Daddy is from T1, why not just let Sarah Connor go to 2007 - not like that. Even in T1, it's possible that Skynet came online in 1997, and it was the actions of the trio in T1 that stopped it in 1994. If Papa went straight to 2007 instead of 1997, they might have arrived in a world that has been reduced to wasteland. So when Kyle Reese insists on going to 2017, Sarah Connor will firmly oppose it - the world may be destroyed if you let go of 1997, if you let go of 2007, what the hell will happen?

Sarah Connor and Papa's decision to "go to 1997" makes sense, because at that point, no one really knew what was going to happen on the T3 timeline - Kyle Reese did. When crossing from T2 to T3, due to the disturbance of time and space, Kyleris accidentally had the memory of T3. Since Kyleris can grow healthily in the blue sky and green grass in T3, it means that Judgment Day has not happened until after he is born, and they can go directly to 2017.

Why does Kyle Reese convince Sarah Connor to trust him by swiping her palm and saying "you keep going"?

Because this action and this sentence are what Dad once said to her, theoretically no one else will know. But now that Kyle Reese knows inexplicably, there is only one possibility: he does have the memory of two worlds because of crossing, which is what Sarah Connor is going to tell the little Kyle Reese in T3. Now that little Kyle Reese can grow up smoothly and have a healthy childhood, it means that Judgment Day neither happened in 1997 nor in 2007, they can go to 2017.

  • [first lines]

Kyle Reese: [narrating] Before they died, my parents told me stories about how the world once was; what it was like long before I was born; before the war with the machines. They remembered a green world, vast and beautiful, filled with laughter and hope for the future. It's a world I never knew. By the time I was born, all this was gone.

Kyle Reese: "Skynet," a computer program designed to automate missile defense. It was supposed to protect us, but that's not what happened. August 29th, 1997, Skynet woke up. It decided all of humanity was a threat to its existence.

    [scenes of mass destruction]

Kyle Reese: It used our own bombs against us. Three billion people died of nuclear fire.

Kyle Reese: Survivors called it Judgement Day. People lived like rats in shadows, hiding, starving, or worse, captured and put into camps for extermination. I was born after Judgement Day, into a broken world ruled by the machines. The worst were infiltration units that posed as humans. We called them Terminators.

John Connor: [finding young Kyle in subterranean tunnels] Are there others down here?

Kyle Reese: And then one man found me. His name was John Connor, and he changed everything. John showed us how to fight back; how to rise up. He freed prisoners. He taught us how to slash the machines to scrap. People whisper about John and wonder how he can know the things he does. They use words like prophet. But John's more. We're here because tonight, he's going to lead us to crush Skynet for good.
