There is no pure land under the sun

The detective film shot by the film master Polanski in Hollywood in 1974 is also a classic noir film. A private detective was hired to investigate an extramarital affair, but did not want to be involved in a municipal scandal involving government and business collusion. Of course, this is not a simple political shady movie. In the meantime, he fell in love with a mysterious lady. The ending It's even more overwhelming

. The most intriguing thing about "Chinatown" is the title. When I watched it for the first time, I didn't know why Polanski used Chinatown. The whole story has nothing to do with Chinatown, even the actors. No face appeared, except in the dialogue that the private detective played by Jack Nicholson had served as a police detective in Chinatown. This time, I saw a clue: As the title of Chinatown, the symbolic meaning is greater than the actual meaning: it is a place where there is no morality, no law, no order, black and white all, black and white reversed, and shady places. (This It was also an important reason for Jack Nicholson to leave the police circle.) When he walked out of Chinatown, he gradually realized that the environment of Chinatown is ubiquitous. Under the sun, there is no pure land. This also laid the groundwork for the tragic style of the film.

In my impression, this geek from the Polish film school rarely made genre films, but this film was made with great gusto. The essence of it is deeper than the charm of Hollywood film noir in the 1940s and 50s. Of course, the script has contributed to it. In contrast to the cliche of Hollywood ending that everyone is happy, justice is as vulnerable as an egg against a stone in the face of evil. As the last wide-angle lens slowly rises, the devil is at large, the good people are on the bottom of the sea, and the sinful Chinatown is shrouded in darkness. Polanski grew up in a Nazi concentration camp, and later experienced the terrifying tragedy in which his wife was killed by a gangster who broke into his home. The scarred master apparently sneered at the evil clichés, which instead made this film from the horrible movie. Stand out and become a generation classic.

The performances of Jack Nicholson and Fei Donnawei are very wonderful, especially the latter, the sad performance style is quite the taste of Mei Gu in the "Sophie's Choice" era, but unfortunately there are not many works later, and it is gradually forgotten. Up.
