Rome - an undefended city - a memorable storyline with vivid characters

The video is wonderful. A year before the end of World War II, Mussolini fell and Hitler occupied Italy. The Italian Communist Party headed by Togliatti united patriots of all classes to form the National Liberation Front and launched an arduous struggle against the German occupiers. The film has created many vivid characters in such a large environment. The engineer Manfetti, a leading member of the National Liberation Front, has a firm position and strong will; the worker Francisco has a noble character and is affectionate and righteous; the priest does not care about himself and takes Jesus as an example; respectable. Even the little people have their own characteristics: the monk under the priest, the old lady of the land and her old maid, the Italian policeman, all kind, honest and credible. Even the villains are not conventional, the Gestapo head is gentle on the outside, but vicious on the inside; the female officer is cunning and cruel, unscrupulous; the Italian police chief is a servile villain, these characters are all abhorrent. And who the film praises, who condemns, who sympathizes with, and who despises, is clearly described with unique artistic techniques. The best scene in the film is the one in which Manfetti and the German devil fight face to face. The German devils seemed to be polite at first, but then moved forward step by step, while Manfetti was righteous and did not retreat at all. That righteous and awe-inspiring momentum overwhelmed the German devils. The priest burst into tears when he saw that Memphetti had been tortured to the point of being bloodied and out of shape, and when Memphetti died, he gently closed his eyes with his hands. He said to the Gestapo in a low voice, "I curse you." At this time, he really looked like Jesus, and the German devils took three steps back in fear. This part of the film is the most touching. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Anti-Fascist War. It is very meaningful to watch this movie again.

Rome, Open City quotes

  • Francesco: We mustn't be afraid now or in the future, because we're on the just path. Understand, Pina?

    Pina: Yes, Francesco.

Francesco: We're fighting for something that has to be, that can't help coming. The road may be long and hard, but we'll get there and we'll see a better world. And our children especially will see it. Marcello and the one on the way. That's why you mustn't ever be afraid, Pina, whatever happens.

  • Giorgio Manfredi aka Luigi Ferraris: You're your own boss. I don't own you. Who am I, anyway? Just one guy who passed through your life for a moment.
