All the gangster stories seem to be unable to get rid of the routine of killing and revenge, but this movie sublimates the revenge of the gang into a collective resistance in pursuit of equality and freedom.
The gangs in New York are mainly composed of the Italian faction led by the Italian Walloon and the Irish faction led by Irish Bill (Daniel Day Lewis). After Vallon was assassinated by Bill, his son Armstrong (Leonardo DiCaprio played by Leonardo DiCaprio) was sent to prison.
With a strong desire for revenge, Armstrong survived 10 years in prison. In order to get revenge, Armstrong stealthily joined the Irish gang led by Bill. However, as he gets closer to Bill, the more he realizes that killing Bill will not ultimately liberate all the persecutors, because there are powerful political forces behind the gang...
