1. Exterior International Shipping Route Bridge during the day
A sign that reads "The Bridge to Canada".
A rather steep 1940s Customs Bridge spans the St. Lawrence River.
Small cars and large trucks line up in different lanes. Customs officers checked and questioned the impatient drivers.
In the distance, a smaller sign reads: "Welcome to Massena, NY for business, family, and yourself."
2. The
great river under the bridge stretches for miles to both ends of the bridge during the day , the river has frozen, and the trees on both sides are still the same.
3. EXT. Ray's mobile home yard in Massena Township, NY
Lei Eddie, thirty-eight years old, with an old face for her age, red hair in a long ponytail, wearing an old bathrobe , sitting in the passenger seat of the red Plymouth Horizon with the doors open, she smokes a cigarette, brooding, her breath clearly visible in the cool morning air.
Bare feet on the icy ground.
In front of her, the rusted 1970s mobile home sits on a slightly sloping cinder block. Next to the house is a small shed, and behind it is the concrete foundation of the house.
Around her, the yard was littered with odds and ends: rusted sleigh seats, the front half of a Plymouth "Durst", a "Smiling Duck" rocker.
Outside the yard is flat, bare winter land.
Moments later, a tall, thin fifteen-year-old boy, her son, Troy Jr., leaned out of the mobile home.
Little Troy: There is no "Captain Crunchy" (Note 1).
His breath could be seen in the cold air.
Ray: Get him some toast.
Little Troy: We have no butter and no aspic.
Ray was out of ideas. Little Troy wished she could come, but she stayed where she was. He looked around the yard.
Little Troy: What are you doing?
Ray: Waiting for the big truck.
Little Troy: Are they really coming?
Ray: Yes.
Little Troy: Where is Daddy?
She was silent.
Little Troy (speaking slowly): Where is Daddy?
She looked at him.
Ray: I don't know how he found it, Troy Jr.
Little Troy: Found what?
Ray took a deep breath. Little Troy walked towards the car.
Little Troy: Money?
Ray: I locked it in the little glove box.
Little Troy looked at the open, empty glove box of the car's dashboard.
Troy Jr.: Stupid enough.
Ray: Yes, I know, but the truck came before the bank opened.
Little Troy: You told him you're rich?
Ray: Huh? No, he found it himself.
Little Troy: God! Small glove box! ? You put your money in such a fucking place.
Ray: He hasn't gambled for nearly thirty-two months. I thought it would be fine.
Little Troy: Did he leave anything behind?
She shook her head.
Little Troy: What are you going to do?
Ray: I don't know.
Little Troy: Are you going to find him?
Ray: He can go anywhere.
Troy Jr.: We should go find him.
Ray: Where are you going?
Little Troy: Reservation.
Ray: With over four thousand dollars, he should be in Atlantic City by now.
Troy Jr.: Then let's go and find him before he loses.
Ray: I'm not going.
Little Troy: What do you mean?
Ray: I can't do that anymore.
Troy Jr.: But he'll lose it all.
Ray: Little Troy, we can't stop him.
Little Troy: He stole our money. call police.
Ray: If you take money from your own home, it's not stealing. Besides, there's a portion of his money in there.
Little Troy: So are you going to sit here?
Ray: Sorry.
In the distance, there was the roar of a big truck. Ray heard the sound. The noise is getting louder.
Little Troy: Another shit Christmas.
Little Troy walked into the shed and slammed the door.
Ray dropped his cigarette butt and walked into the mobile home.
4. INTERIOR Ray's Mobile Home During the day
she looks around the cramped mobile home, stuffed with oversized furniture from Rental World, including a large-screen TV.
An enlarged family photo on the wall caught her eye. In the photo, her husband, Troy Sr., forty years old, has a forced smile, his long, shaggy hair groomed for the photo.
Ray hurried across the living room into the bedroom, took off her bathrobe—she had several tattoos on her body—and quickly slipped on her jeans and T-shirt.
A sleepy-eyed, blond-haired little boy, Ricky, came in, his shirt pulled up to the cuffs of his pajama pants. He blinked.
Ricky: Okay?
Seeing him, Ray stopped what he was doing and knelt down.
Ray: Hi, Sleepworm.
Ricky: Okay? I'm ready.
He was in the corner, pulling a suitcase full of plastic dinosaurs.
Outside, the rumbling sound grew louder and louder. Ricky rushed out of the bedroom, through the living room, to the door of the mobile home.
Ray: Wait a minute ......
he broke into the yard, where ......
The location of the mobile home during the day and mine
a pickup car with one "super load" slogan, closely followed by a two-wheeled truck, I dragged a few two-by-one prefabricated houses, and the plastic sheet wrapped outside fluttered gently in the wind.
Seeing the big man, Ricky stopped and made a quick turn so as not to pee his pants.
Little Troy came out of the carport.
The truck pulled the mobile home and stopped in the yard.
Guy Versailles, big belly in green brushed overalls, squeezes out of his truck. The door reads: "Masseine Modular Prefab, Brand New and Refurbished".
Ricky grabbed a rope hanging from the mobile home and tried to climb up. The truck driver looks down from the cab.
TROY Jr. (to Ricky): Come down.
Ray peered out through the kitchen curtain.
Moments later, she came out of the mobile home, smiling.
Ray: We are all ready.
She points to the new concrete foundation. He looked at a clipboard with spring clips.
Versailles: The last payment has to be made.
Little Troy looked at Ray.
Ray: We have money, it just happened that they called from Titus last night and called Troy away. That's where Troy worked. A place to ski...anyway...
Versailles: Do you have $4,372?
Lei: This is a bit urgent, so I didn't think about the money when I left... I forgot that you were coming. Once he's back...
Versailles: When will he be back?
Ray: I'll give you the money as soon as he comes back.
Little Troy was very nervous.
Versailles (laughs sarcastically): This is the second time you've made me run for nothing. If you don't pay by Christmas, you'll lose your $1,500 deposit.
He walked towards the car. "She followed him.
Ray: Mr. Versailles, I have a good job at the dollar store." After Christmas, they might make me a manager, so if you leave the house, I'll put The money was paid...
He got into the car.
Versailles: When you have the last payment, call me.
His hands circled in the air, and the two-wheeled truck started its engine, crunching backwards.
Ray: I'll call you.
Her voice was drowned out by the engine cranking.
Ricky lunged at her.
Ricky: Wait, where are they going?
She held his face.
Ray: Listen to me. I will bring them back.
Ricky: Why did they leave?
Ray: Ricky, I'll get them back. I promise you, sweetheart.
Ricky: That's our house!
Ricky broke free of her and ran down the road, behind the two-wheeled truck. Ray chased Ricky until he couldn't run anymore and stopped to catch his breath.
She grabbed him and tried to hug him. Ricky pushed her away. She knelt down, cupping his face in her hands.
Ray: We'll get it back.
She picked up Ricky and walked towards the mobile home. Ricky watched sadly at the two-wheeled truck that went down the road.
RAY (to Troy Jr.) You better hurry up or you'll miss the train. Put your clothes on, Ricky.
Little Troy glared at her.
Troy Jr.: You know I can get a job.
Ray: Little Troy, you're only fifteen years old.
Little Troy: They won't ask anything.
Ray: You're about to graduate.
Little Troy: Come on, do you really think we can live off the little money you make at the dollar store?
Ray: Go to school obediently.
She went into the house. Little Troy followed her.
Troy Jr.: Bet I can make more money than you.
She ignored him.
6. RAY'S MOBILE HOME DAY
RAY helps Ricky get dressed and carries his schoolbag behind him.
Ricky: Where's Dad?
Ray and Troy Jr looked at each other.
Ray: He'll be back.
Little Troy: Aren't we even looking for it?
Ray: No! I'm going to work and you're going to school.
Little Troy: That's it?
Ray: The only thing that changed was that your dad started gambling again. Nothing else has changed.
Ricky: Where's Dad?
Ray: He's on a business trip."
Little Troy rolled his eyes.
Little Troy: You didn't even look for him?
Ray: Then you missed a day? No. It won't happen again. We have to live our lives. Now go get you . bags
little warm Troy stared angrily.
Ray: go ah!
Ricky: Daddy coming home?
Ray: I do not know, Ricky
small Troy: I can not believe you did not find him.
Ray: Where? Where am I going to find him? (He can't answer)
Troy Jr.: Reservation.
Ray: I'm telling you, he should be in Atlantic City by now.
She helps Ricky pick up her bag and kisses He.
Troy Jr. (shaking his head): Little glove box. Stupid enough.
Ray: You have to go to school.
Little Troy followed Ricky out to catch the school bus that had arrived outside the door.
Suddenly, Ray remembered something.
Ray: Wait a minute.
They turned around. She took out her pocket.
Ray: Here it is. lunch money.
They took the money and went to catch the school bus.
Ray watched them from behind, then reached for his cigarette. There were only two, and she picked up one, lit it, and pulled out the mascara.
In front of the bathroom mirror, she tried her best to apply mascara, but the tears kept falling.
(CUT TO)
7. INT "The Dollar Store" In
a messy hallway full of boxes during the day , Ray is placing cheap plastic replicas of "My Little Pony" on the shelves.
Matt, twenty-two, her boss, bony and rough-skinned, walked by.
Ray (soft voice): Matt "Can I talk to you?
He looks at her.
Ray: I need a full-time job.
Matt blinks, expressionless----
Matt: I think you still do Day job.
Ray: Why?
Matt: Day job. You don't have to work here for a long time, you don't have to be really loyal.
Ray follows him into the storage room.
Ray: When I first started, you said I was going to work for at least six months. To be a full-time employee. It's been two years now.
He opens a can of Red Bull and takes a sip.
Matt: That's what I meant.
Ray: But, I said, you know, at least I came to work. Pa
Matt is late every day. She hasn't come yet. She's always late. He stares at her blankly. She doesn't know what to say. Matt walks out.
Ray continues to give those My Little Pony toys Unpack.
After a while, twenty-two-year-old Pat burst in, looking apologetic. As Pat hung up her coat, Ray caught a glimpse of a "How are you?" tattoo on top of her low-waisted breeches.
Ray took her last cigarette out of her bag and walked towards the back door.
Ray: See you tomorrow.
8. Interior/Exterior Route 37 "Horizon" car Tian
Lei drives along a two-lane highway. Except for a few scattered mobile homes and warehouses, it was an empty plain.
She passed a lonely sign: "Bridge to Canada."
Ahead, is another sign: "Akvisani, Mohawk Territory".
Viewed from the car, the Indian reservation was home to a few humble homes with no siding, a few duty-free gas stations, and low-class taverns with homemade signs. Ray slowed down slightly, searching the parking lot for her husband's car.
Looking up, she saw a sign that said "Wolf Matt Duty Free Fuel Cigarettes".
9. WOLF MART FUEL STATION DAY
Lei pulls his car into this comprehensive gas station with restaurants and a mini-mall.
A teenage Mohawk boy, wearing a floral silk bandana and no jacket, got out of it and ran to the car, rubbing his hands against the cold.
Teenage Mohawk: Top up?
She rolled down the window and rummaged for change under the car seat. She counted.
Ray: Only three bucks... oh no... two bucks seven cents, two, three, four.
Teenage Mohawk: Two dollars and seventy cents.
He nodded and walked over to the gas pump. She found a folded five-dollar bill.
Ray (calling out the window): Seven dollars and seventy cents.
Through the car window, she found a sign that said "Long Distance Bus".
Ray: Did you see a blue "compliment" car here last night?
Teenage Mohawk: Blue "compliment" car...I don't see it, I work until 9pm. You can go inside and ask.
Ray glanced into the dining room that was empty of anyone but a few elderly Mohawk women.
Ray: No, thank you.
Teenage Mohawk: Would you like to support our "Mosquito" hockey club? Basic hockey skills are taught here for children aged three to five.
Ray shook his head.
Teenage Mohawk: Thank you anyway! wish you happiness!
10. In/Out Route 37 "Horizon" vehicle Daytime
Lei passes through the reservation and continues south along the highway.
She drove to a huge warehouse, "Mohawk Bingo (Note 2) Palace."
She glanced at the crowd of cars around the warehouse. At the end of a row of cars, she saw: a blue "compliment".
Ray hurried in.
11. EXTERIOR Mohawk Bingo Palace parking lot
Lei stops next to the "Praise" car during the day , confirming it from a small "Don't panic" sign affixed to the car's bumper.
She got out of the car and looked inside the "Praise" car. There was a small plastic dinosaur toy thrown on the floor in the back seat.
She leaned against the car for a while.
Ray: Thank you! God! Thank you, thank you! Thank you... After a
moment, Ray looked up at "Mohawk Bingo Palace" and walked towards the gate.
Ray: Son of a bitch.
12. ENTRY TO MOWEK BINGO PALACE - DAY
A short-haired, stocky Mohawk woman in her mid-60s sits on a metal chair by a velvet rope. Her blue eyes were sharp and she had lost a few teeth.
Conductor: The round of sunrise is coming to an end. The next round starts at 10:30.
Ray: I just went in and had a look.
Ray walked inside the gate, and the conductor stuck out her foot.
Conductor: Tickets are five dollars.
Ray: I don't want to play, I just go in and have a look.
Conductor: That's five dollars too.
Ray: I'll just stand at the door and watch. I can't get in. I just wanted to see if my husband was in there.
Conductor: Then you have to buy a ticket to visit.
Ray: He gambled with the money our family bought the house.
Conductor: What does he look like?
Ray: Long brown hair. tall. Very thin. With a ponytail.
Conductor: He's not in there.
Ray: Can I take a look?
Conductor: I told you, ma'am, he's not in there.
Ray walks away. The conductor stared at her.
13. EXTERIOR Mohawk Bingo Palace Parking Lot
Lei comes out of the entrance during the day , walks through the parking lot, passes rows of cars, and walks towards the Horizon car.
Opposite the parking lot, Laila Littleover, a twenty-year-old Mohawk woman with long black hair, rushed out of the "employee entrance" and ripped off her as she hurried through the parking lot. Work skirt for scratch cards.
Ray caught her at a glance, but before Ray got to the Horizon, Lyra was at Praise and she got into the car and backed it out.
Ray: Hi!
But Laila had already driven away.
Ray jumped into the "horizon" and galloped off after Lyra.
14. EXTERIOR RESERVATION HIGHWAY In the daytime,
Lei chased Zan along Route 37 and saw it turn onto a dirt road.
Ray then turned and saw Praise bump into a path through the woods.
Ray followed Praise through the woods to an open field: Praise stopped in front of a rusted dome camper.
Laila gets out of the car. Ray stopped the car behind her and rolled down the window.
Ray: That's my car.
Laila spit aside.
Laila: What?
Ray (pointing to the "Praise"): What are you driving my car for?
Laila grabbed the key in her hand.
Laila: That? I found it.
Ray: You steal the car.
Laila: The car keys are in there.
Ray: Then you just drive it away...?
Laila stepped into the camper dome and closed the door behind her.
Ray got out of the Horizon and walked towards the dome door, pulling out her phone.
Ray: I'd rather see what the police have to say.
LAYLA (voiceover, from inside the camper): Whatever, they don't have power here. This is the domain of the Mohawks.
Ray stopped dialing, closed his phone, walked toward the "horizon," took out his pistol, and returned to the camper.
Ray (knocks on the door with a gun): Stop talking nonsense and give me the keys quickly.
no respond. Ray waited a moment, then-----
Ray (whispering): Troy, are you there?
Still no response.
Ray: If you're here, you'd better come out for me.
15. LAYLA'S CAMP - DAY In the
dark daytime in the camper, Laila sits on a camp bed with a lamp on the floor next to it. Clothes littered a pile of empty Pringles cans.
RAY (voice-over, tentatively, under fire): Troy? Versailles said that if we paid before Christmas, we would not lose our deposit. (Pauses) I think we need to talk about this, come on out. (Pause) Troy? Troy?
16. LAYLA'S CAMPER DAY
Lei takes aim and fires at the camper's door.
17. INTERIOR Leila's Camper by Day
Vibrated by a gust of wind, Laila bounced off the camp bed. She looked at the smoking hole.
RAY (Voiceover): I'm not kidding, baby, come out!
18. LAYLA'S CAMPER DAY
Lyra hides behind a door and opens it. Ray looked inside the car: there was no Troy.
Laila (from behind the door): The tribal cops don't like you shooting people's houses.
Ray looked at her.
Ray: This is New York State, shut your mouth and give me your car keys.
Laila threw the keys out the door. Ray picked up the keys from the ground. Laila closed the door with her foot.
19. LAYLA'S CAMERA DAY
Lei gets into "Horizon" and pulls up behind "Praise" as she rummages in the trunk and pulls out a rope.
Ray tied one end of the rope to the Praise's rear bumper, then tied the other end of the rope to the Horizon's front bumper.
Laila looked out the camper's window.
Ray got into the Praise car, started the engine, and slowly towed the Horizon, before the rope snapped a few steps away.
Ray got out of the car and looked at the broken rope. Then rummage through the trunk for more ropes.
Lyra opened the camper's door and looked at the bullet holes.
Laila: This camper belongs to my brother. He didn't like seeing this.
RAY (turns his head): That way you can get away with stealing the car.
Laila: I thought nobody wanted it, the guy came in the car and got on the bus.
Ray stopped.
Ray: Did you see where the bus was going?
Laila: New York or Buffalo, I don't know.
Ray re-twisted the remaining rope into a towline.
This time, Horizon moved forward an inch or two before the rope broke.
Ray (whispering): Damn it!
Ray rummaged through the trunk, looking for other ropes.
In her back pocket, "Old MacDonald" rang.
Lyra felt the bullet holes in the camper van and stood at the door listening to Ray's conversation.
Ray put the phone back in her pocket, took out an old belt from her husband, and tied it to the car's bumper.
Ray returned to the Praise car and tried to drag the Horizon again.
This time, the right side of the car's front bumper was disconnected, and one end was pulled down.
Ray got out of the car and looked at Laila.
Ray: I'm not going to throw it here.
LAYLA (pointing to "compliments"): I have a friend who might buy this car.
Ray: This car is not for sale.
Lyra: He's paying more than the car is worth.
Ray ignored her.
Laila: Two thousand.
Ray: What?
Laila: He's always looking for cars that have a trunk opening button.
Ray thought.
Laila: No documentation or anything.
Ray: He used these cars to rob a bank or what?
Laila shrugged.
Laila: I knew he'd give a good price for the car.
Ray: Where does he live?
Laila: Through the woods. not far.
Ray: What's in it for you?
Laila: He gave me a little referral fee.
Ray: If you want to do something, I'll shoot.
Laila: All right.
20. INTERIOR RESERVE The woods "Praise" car Tian
Lei drives with one hand and holds a gun in the other. The gun was pointed at Lyra, who was sitting in the passenger seat.
Laila: Turn right there.
Ray: Where?
Laila: Where there are stakes.
Ray turned the steering wheel with one hand, and the car jolted through a grassy path in the woods. Ray drove to the stake.
Ray (nervously): No way.
Laila: There's a trail.
Ray hesitated.
Laila: Not far.
Ray turned and drove deeper into the woods. The gun swung up and down in Ray's hands as they tossed up and down in the woods.
Laila tried not to look at it.
21. EXTERNAL SHIPPING SLIDE "Praise" car During the day, the
car emerges from the woods to a ship launching slide that leads to a one-kilometer-wide area of the frozen St. Lawrence River.
22. INTERNATIONAL Ship Launching Slide "Praise" Che Tian
Lei looks at the ice outside. Across the snowy ice, between carefully planted and manicured evergreens, there is a road paved by car tires.
Laila: Don't drive too fast. There are car prints here.
Ray: I don't drive there.
Laila: Don't worry, they've shipped the tree. No thin ice here.
Ray: That's Canada over there.
Laila: No, it's Mohawk territory. Both sides of the river are reservations.
Ray: What about the Border Patrol?
Laila: There are no boundaries here.
Ray: Then I won't go either.
Lyra: Don't worry, Plymouth car. I saw two wheeled trailers drive past.
Ray looked at Laila suspiciously.
Lyra: The other way is Cornwall Bridge, but they won't let you hold that. (points to gun)
Suddenly, a large truck driven by a teenage Mohawk boy rumbled out of the woods, turned around "Praise" like a fish, and then Drive fast across the ice.
Laila: They all shoveled snow.
Ray cautiously released the brakes, wobbled off the ship's launch slide, and headed toward the flat ice of the big river.
RAY (in a low voice): That's stupid.
Laila: Don't drive too fast, there are car prints.
23. THE PRAISE CAR ON THE GLACIER During the day
, the Praise car drives over a flat glacier.
24. On the ice, the "praise" car Tian
Lei looks straight ahead, grips the steering wheel tightly, and doesn't dare to let out the air. Lyra glanced at the gun in Ray's hand, then looked at the river outside the window, not at all worried.
They came to the Dahe Boundary Monument and drove past peacefully.
Laila: You'll have to go a little faster to get ashore.
Thunder accelerated. "Praise" jumps up the embankment slope.
Laila: Just outside the woods.
25. EXT/IN Jimmy's garage vacant "compliment" car DAY
Ray and Lyra drive into a chained used car store. There was no sign of anyone anywhere. Ray stopped the car.
Laila: Honk the horn.
Ray honked his horn.
Suddenly, from under a dilapidated truck, jumped out a large black dog with wolf blood. The black dog jumped on the hood of the "compliment" car.
As soon as Lei saw the black dog, he firmly pressed against the seat back. Laila snatched the gun from her hand and pointed it at Ray.
Laila: Shut your mouth.
Ray stared at the barking black dog.
Laila: Just shut up. Understand?
Lei didn't look away from the black dog, she nodded.
Lyra honked the horn again and lowered the gun so no one could see it.
Thirty-three-year-old Jimmy, a stocky Mohawk, came out of the garage eating a sandwich.
He looked suspiciously at Ray first, then at Laila.
The black dog growled lowly.
Jimmy: Thunderstorm! Shut up!
The black dog barked fiercely at Lei.
Jimmy: Go back down.
The black dog jumped off the hood and disappeared under the truck.
Jimmy walked to the passenger side of the car. Laila rolled down the window.
Laila: Hi, Jimmy.
Jimmy glanced at Ray.
Jimmy: He doesn't like white people, Laila.
Laila: Sorry.
Jimmy: You're late.
Laila: Sorry.
Jimmy: I can't even talk to you anymore.
Laila: I know. Feel sorry.
He handed her a paper bag.
Jimmy walked back to the garage and opened the door. Two young Chinese men in cheap sportswear followed him out, looking around.
26. JIMMY'S GARAGE GLOBE "Praise"
CAR DAY Lyra hands the paper bag to Ray and points her gun at her, low down so no one else can see it.
Laila: Count.
Ray: Do what?
Laila: Just count the money.
Ray opened his pockets. Filled with banknotes. It's fifty and one hundred dollars. Ray counted the money.
Laila: How much?
Ray: One thousand two.
Lyra opened the small glove box on the car's dashboard and pressed the trunk switch button.
Jimmy let two Chinese men get into the trunk. Jimmy put the lid on.
Jimmy tapped the hood twice and walked towards the garage.
LAYLA (to Ray) Let's go.
Ray: Wait a minute, who are they?
Laila: Just go back.
Ray: I wouldn't be driving if those people didn't get out of my trunk.
Laila: You get half the money. let's go.
Jimmy turned his head and looked suspiciously at the two women who were arguing.
Laila: Let's go.
Ray: I'm not going to take them across the border. This is crime.
Laila: There are no boundaries here. Just free trade between tribes.
Ray: This is not a country.
Lyra held the gun to the side of Ray's body.
LAYLA (lowering her voice): Let's go.
Jimmy turned around and walked towards the car. Ray backed up and drove away.
27. EXTERIOR "Praise" car

28. 'Praise' car on the ice
. Daytime Lei drives the car. Lyra turned to face Ray and pointed the gun at her.
Laila: Why did your husband leave you?
Ray: Fuck you.
Laila: Maybe he's looking for a young pussy.
Ray stared at the glacier outside.
Laila: Usually it's like that.
Ray didn't speak.
Laila: I never worry about that. My husband died. He fell into the river when he was running away. They never found him again. Maybe tangled in the water plants in the river.
She gave Ray a ghostly look.
Laila: You'd better drive slowly, there are no car prints here. You will fall into it.
Ray sped up, slipped slightly off the ice, and roared up the ship's launch slide.
29. EXTERIOR RESERVATION FOR THE WOODS "Praise" Car Daytime

30. INTERIOR Route 37 "Praise" car
Bai Tianlei slows down at the sign.
Laila: Keep going.
Ray: What if the police stop us?
Laila: They won't stop you. You are white.
Ray continued to drive forward.

Tianlei sees the businessman hurrying towards them.
Laila: Don't get out of the car and wait for him to come to the window.
Lyra put the gun down low.
The merchant approached them cautiously.
Laila: Roll down the window on your side.
He walked slowly and handed Laila a brown paper bag.
Laila: Count.
Ray opened the paper bag and, as before, counted the money.
Ray: One thousand two.
Laila took the bill from Ray and slammed the trunk open. Two Chinese men hurried out. The businessman led them into the garage.
Laila: Let's go.
34. Route 37 "Praise" car
Tian Lei and Laila turn back to Route 37, past the sign "Akvisani, Mohawk Territory".
Laila continued to point the gun at Ray.
Laila: Turn over there.
Ray saw the dirt road leading to the woods.
Laila: Stop here.
Ray stopped.
Laila: Open the door.
Ray hesitated. Lyra put the gun to her body.
Laila: Open the door.
Ray opened the door.
Laila: Get out of here.
Ray didn't move.
Ray: You can't drive my car away.
Laila: Get out.
Ray: You can't drive my car away.
Lyra tried to kick Leary out of the driver's door with her foot.
Ray gripped the steering wheel tightly.
Ray: No!
Suddenly, Ray grabbed Laila's hair and tugged her head against the car seat. Lyra shot Ray in the head with the gun.
Ray (gasps): You son of a bitch!
Bleeding, Ray tugged at Laila's hair and snatched the gun from her. Laila snatched the wad of cash, jumped out of the passenger side of the car, and ran into the woods.
Ray ran after her, but Laila was faster than her, ran ahead of her, and disappeared into the woods. Ray stopped, gasping for breath, wiping the blood from his forehead.
RAY (calling after her): Bitch.
Ray, behind Lyra, stared for a long time, then returned to the Praise car.
35. The yard of Lei's mobile home outside Lei Tian
Lei returns in his "Praise" car.
Little Troy wears goggles and uses a welding gun to repair a broken rocker. He didn't notice Ray.
Ray covered the cut on his forehead with his hair, got out of the car, walked behind little Troy, and patted him on the shoulder. He was startled and hurriedly extinguished the flame.
Ray: I told you not to use this when I'm not home.
Little Troy: If I fix it, I can sell it.
She looked at a few rusted places on the rocking car.
Ray: I don't care. Don't use the welding gun when I'm not home.
Little Troy: Someone from the rental company called. They said if you don't pay by 4pm tomorrow they will take the TV away.
He noticed the car.
Little Troy: Did you find him?

Ray: I'll drive tomorrow.
Little Troy: You left it on the reservation? How stupid!
Ray: I don't have a leash.
Little Troy: I said, let's just beat that guy up.
Ray: Forget it, little Troy, did you eat with Ricky?

After the two cars were roped together, Ray got into the "compliment" car, but she didn't drive it away, she just sat there.

Ray: No way.
Laila: It's all gone.
Lei: I want to transport a few more Chinese.
The door opened. Ray took a few steps back with his gun in hand. They looked at each other.
Laila: I have to pay to fill that hole. I was freezing to death last night.
Ray pulled his hair back to reveal the wound above his eyes.
Ray: I just need enough money to pay the mortgage on the house, and then I'm off the hook. I am not a criminal.
Laila: It's not a crime.
Ray: Say what you want. I just want my money.
The two stood there, looking at each other for a long time, and then Ray walked over and untied the ropes attached to the Horizon and Praise bumpers.

Ray: What the fuck is this?
Laila: Just roll down the window.
Bruno was standing outside Ray's car window.
Ray tucked the pistol under his thigh and rolled down the window.
Bruno hands her a Tim Hortons bag. She took the bag.
Bruno (Quebec French accent): They don't like female drivers.
He handed the envelope containing the cash to Ray.
Laila: Counting the money.
Lei counted the money nervously, and the two Chinese men shivered outside the car.
Ray: One thousand two.
Lyra opened the trunk with a thud. Bruno and the Chinese man circled to the back of the "Praise" car. Only the sound of the trunk closing.
Bruno went back to Ray's side and tapped on the window.
Ray looked at Laila.

Ray: How much will this cost?
Laila: Four or five thousand. Depends where they come from.

Laila: They gave me the choice to pay a fine or go to jail for three months.
Ray: How did you do it?
Laila: I paid the fine. Then, in two nights of smuggling, I made my money back. Then again, it's just some cigarettes, everyone does it. Some cops also like to smoke.

Little Troy: Impossible.
Ray: Don't believe me?

a baby boy, "Little Jack," about a year old, tapped the tray on the baby chair with a spoon, then dropped the spoon on the ground.
Evelyn Littleover, forty-eight, a tall, lanky Mohawk with long hair pulled back, picked up a spoon and handed it to Jake.
Little Jack threw the spoon out again. He knew it was a game. Evelyn handed him the spoon, but on the third turn, she stood out of his reach with the spoon and smiled at him. Little Jack tapped the tray with his fist.

Ray (pretending to be happy): Hi...it's me...please leave a message...I'll call you once.
She played back the message. Sounds a little fake this time. She tries again.
RAY (less joy, bluntly): Hey, leave me a message and I'll call you. (lowers his voice) Son of a bitch.
She plays the recording. This time, "Bitch" was taped.
She recorded again.
Ray: Hi, it's me. Now, I can't answer the phone, and if it were you, Troy, at least please tell me you're alive because the kids miss you.

Ray pulls out a picture, printed on glossy photo paper, of her dream big house: a gleaming prefab house with a bonus garden, a family with a "paid" smile.

Ray struggled to look out of the windshield, driving nervously. The windshield fluid is about to run out.
Ray: Shit!
Laila looked up. The glass is white.
Laila: You have to stop the car so I can top up the wiper fluid.
Ray: I don't stop.
Laila: If we're driving on thin ice, it's hundreds of feet below.
Lei poked his head out, and outside the car was a gluttonous gluttony. She stopped.
Laila got out of the car with the wiper fluid. Ray slammed the hood open.
Ray looked back at the duffel backpack on the back seat. She hesitated for a moment, then reached behind her, opened the door, and threw her backpack out of the car.
Laila sat back in the car.
Laila: What are you doing?
Ray: Nuclear weapons, poison gas...you don't know what they're going to do here. I don't want to take responsibility for this.
Ray tried the wipers. The liquid cleans the windshield.
Ray dialed her cell phone with one hand.
Ray: Hi, I'll be back a little later. (Pauses)) I have to work. Is Ricky asleep? -----Let him answer the phone. (Pause) ----- Ricky listen to me, he won't come if you don't sleep. (Pauses) No. No. He's still flying over Canada, okay? He hasn't done his Canadian work yet, so if you don't sleep, he won't come. Let your brother answer the phone. ------I'll be home in a while, okay? ------ No, I haven't bought it yet. Again, what's it called? ------Hot Wheels racing car, okay, okay, if I can buy it, I will definitely buy it. ------I can't promise, little Troy. ------For this Christmas, I have more important things to do. Go home in a while. Alright, bye.
RAY (to Lyra) You think a new house is enough.
Lei increased the accelerator and drove towards the ship's launch slide on the river bank.

TROY Jr. (dialing): Hi, is Mickey there? (Long pause)
Microwave ding. Little Troy took out the phone, took out two "hungry" instant meals, and put them on the table.
Little Troy: Hi, Mickey. I'm little Troy. No, that little Troy from school. Yes, man. Well, I don't know if you still need those numbers, we talked about it before and I have one here. -----how much? ------ Great, but I really don't have a car right now. ----- Moira Road off Route 37. ------Okay, but, something else...------(he whispers into the phone, in a barely audible voice)...no, Hot Wheels- ---- Yes, awesome. Oh man, thank you so much. Bye-Bye.
He hung up the phone and put the convenience meal on the table.
TROY Jr. (to Ricky): Ricky, dinner.
Little Troy turned around. Ricky, who had wrapped himself head to toe in Christmas lights, was circling slowly, holding the wire.
Ricky: Hi, little Troy, look at this!
He plugged in the power, and the little bulbs were all lit.
Troy Jr.: Oh, that's cool. But if you sit down, it will hurt you.
Ricky giggled.
Little Troy: Now you take it down yourself, it's time to eat.
