Catch-22 (1970)
continues to complete HDTV movies. The HDTV 720P version I downloaded this time has some problems, and most of them can't be seen later, so I re-downloaded the RMVB suppressed by "Sunshine in My Heart". But after I read the RMVB version, I re-merged the 720P version with MKVToolnix, and found that I could read it again! Hey, if I knew this, I would not watch the vague RMVB version.
The film tells the story of a U.S. Air Force pilot stationed in Italy during World War II. The male protagonist is an air force gunner who is tired of flying and wants to go home, but his superiors keep increasing the number of flights, which makes him very depressed. The male protagonist wanted to pretend to be crazy to avoid flying, but the doctor told him Catch 22: A lunatic must prove himself crazy! However, people who can prove that they are insane are not insane, so this is a trap. One day, the male protagonist was recruited by his superiors and told him that he could go back to China, but he wanted to praise their two superiors after returning to China, and the male protagonist agreed. However, when the male protagonist left, he was stabbed in the back with a knife. The fallen male protagonist remembered his comrades and their stories in hallucinations:
1. A comrade in arms was cut off by another comrade's plane while waving at the beach. The comrade-in-arms who piloted the plane crashed into the mountain, and the plane crashed and died.
2. A comrade-in-arms and their superiors wanted to use military materials to make a fortune but lost money, so they had to contact the German army to blow up the unsold materials in their own army. This comrade also monopolized the prostitute business in Rome.
4. A comrade-in-arms who had crashed several times disappeared after a crash, and a few months later other comrades learned that he had drifted to Sweden and was rescued and settled. The male protagonist thought he had already died, so he pretended to be dead in place of his comrades and met his parents.
5. A comrade was killed by a collapsed building while the Germans were bombing supplies. The male protagonist hurried to tell his prostitute girlfriend, but he was beaten in return.
6. A comrade-in-arms raped an Italian girl and pushed her down the window. The girl fell to her death on the spot, but the comrades did not take it seriously.
In the end, the male protagonist recovered, and immediately became excited after learning from his comrades that some comrades drifted to Sweden. As a result, the male protagonist abandoned the agreement with his superiors and ran to the sea with an inflatable boat, trying to escape from the military camp.
This is an absurd military comedy, which reminds me of "Army Field Hospital" in the same year. It seems that that generation of Americans is full of disgust with the military and spared no effort to vilify the US military. Probably because of the Vietnam War, which hurt Americans very much....
Simply speaking, the movie is ordinary in my opinion. It has neither a deep theme, nor an engaging plot, nor a funny passage, and the characterization is quite satisfactory. So from the viewing point of view, it is very ordinary, so mediocre that it wants to put people to sleep. However, the movie shows all kinds of unconventional and logical things in the US military, as well as some situations of the soldiers, which still has some meaning.
After watching the movie, I went to the Internet to check some information about the original book, and found that the book was once all the rage. There are many praises, such as "This novel has won people's praise for its rich artistic content, serious theme ideas and absurd descriptions, and it has become a major breakthrough in the American literary world in the early 1960s. By 1980, light A certain publishing house has already issued more than 1.5 million copies." Even the critics shouted "this is a work with great artistic charm", "this is a brilliant work", "this is a great pioneering work of English literature", etc. Wait. But I don't think this book has much value, isn't it a satirical novel without a complete plot and prominent characters! Not surprisingly, Westerners are rare and strange.
The filming was mediocre. Mike Nichols is a relatively talented director, but his talent doesn't show up at all in this film. Mike Nichols made the film very mediocre, not only featureless, but also without a bit of personal style. And the narrative of the film is still a bit confusing. For example, after watching the whole film, I still don't know, what exactly did the actor get injured on the plane? Or get stabbed in the back? The funniest thing is that no matter which of the two conclusions is chosen, there is no difference in the understanding of the plot! What a messy movie.
The actor's performance is quite satisfactory. The male protagonist is Alan Arkin, who has recently appeared in movies such as "Escape from Tehran". However, his acting skills are mediocre, and he does not see any uniqueness. There's also a handsome guy in the film, Anthony Perkins, who was impressive in "Psycho", and he's still as handsome in this film. Except for these two people, no one else was impressed. As for the actresses, they are all rambunctious, let alone.
in conclusion. This is a very ordinary movie, and audiences who come only for the title of the movie will be disappointed after watching it. Of course, "Army Field Hospital" wasn't great either that same year, and the two were on par. Because I really have no interest in satirical comedies like this, how boring!
