Mary Poppins (1964)

Mary Poppins (1964)

is the 24th film in North American history.

The film tells the story of a fairy who cares for and educates a brother and sister. There is a brother and sister in a British family who are so mischievous that many nannies quit their jobs. The father decides to keep hiring a babysitter, so the children make a wish for a babysitter who will meet their requirements. After hearing the children's request, the fairy in the sky came to apply for a babysitter and easily passed the father's interview. In this way, the two children traveled around under the guidance of the fairy, and they also met a homeless man on the way. All four of them had a great time during the entire game. At the same time, fairies also brought joy to the family. Because of this, the father was very puzzled, so when the fairy talked to the fairy, he said that he would take the children to the place where he worked. The next day, the father led the two children to the bank where they worked. The children saw the old man mentioned by the fairy in front of the bank and wanted to donate their money to her. However, his father and the managers of the bank did not agree, so the boy had to shout loudly, causing people in the bank to think that the bank was in crisis, and everyone came to withdraw money. Soon the bank became crowded, and the two children got lost, but luckily a homeless friend who met a fairy on the way sent them home. Afterwards, the fairy, the tramp and the two children danced on the roof until the father returned. In the evening, when my father came to the bank, he was dismissed because of the disturbance during the day, but at this time my father understood what the fairy was talking about. Finally, the father told the bank boss the joke the children told him, the boss soon died in laughter, so the father got his job again, and the fairy left quietly.

The movie was so boring that it took me over a week to finish watching it. Why is it boring? Because the plot is boring, the songs are mediocre, and there is a strong didactic sense. The most important thing is that this film and "The Sound of Music" are in the same model. They are both musical and dance films for educating children to grow up. Compared with the two films, there is a world of difference! Can I still watch it? I really don't understand, why did this movie sell so well at the box office? Probably in that era, people's spiritual world was very scarce, and people flocked to it if they had a little joy and a little singing.

Watching the film alone, it's empty and of little value. The film spends most of its time singing and dancing, part of it hanging out with cartoon characters, and the rest of the time it's the heroine and the tramp lecturing children and their parents. Therefore, in addition to singing and dancing, this film is left to educate people, and it is difficult for people to like it! Perhaps the song and dance of this film were very popular at that time, but now it is too rough and rudimentary, even if it is compared with the contemporary "The Sound of Music", the gap is quite large. All in all, I don't see any advantages from this movie, only disadvantages.

The only thing that caught the attention of the filming was the combination of live action and animation, but those scenes looked very unreal! The technology is so outdated! But this is understandable, after all, it has been a long time. But except for the animation part, most of the film's exteriors are fake, which I don't like very much. The crew is also too poor, and they are reluctant to shoot live for just a few outdoor scenes, which is too stingy! So looking at this movie now, you will feel that it is behind the times, and the soil is slag!

The performance of the actors in this film is very ordinary, and they are all normal performances. Actress Julie Andrews has little acting and mostly sings. The male protagonist Dick Van Dyke is impressive, but he is not handsome, and his age is too old, so it is difficult for people to have a good impression. Apart from these two people, the other actors in the film are very ordinary and not worth mentioning.

in conclusion. This is a mediocre musical, mainly for parents and children, because it is too didactic!

Mary Poppins quotes

  • Horseman: [saluting] View halloo!

Horse: [also saluting] Oh, yes, definitely. A view halloo.

    Fox: View halloo?

[the horseman blows his bugle and the others pursue the fox]

Fox: Faith and begora, 'tis them Redcoats again!

  • Jane: Oh, Bert, we're so frightened.

Bert: Now, now, don't take on so. Bert will take care of you. Like I was your father. Now, who's after you?

    Jane: Father is.

    Bert: What?

Michael: He brought us to see his bank.

Jane: I don't know what we did, but it must have been something dreadful.

Michael: He sent the police after us, and the army, and everything.

    Jane: Michael, don't exaggerate.

Bert: Well now, there must be some mistake. Your dad's a fine gentleman and he loves you.

Jane: I don't think so. You should have seen the look on his face.

Michael: He doesn't like us at all.

Bert: Well now, that don't seem likely, does it?

    Jane: It's true.

Bert: Let's sit down. You know, begging your pardon, but the one my heart goes out to is your father. There he is, in that cold heartless bank day after day, hammed in by mounds of cold heartless money. I don't like to see any living thing caged up.

    Jane: Father in a cage?

Bert: They makes cages of all sizes and shapes, you know. Bank-shaped, some of them, carpets and all.

Jane: Father's not in trouble. We are.

Bert: Oh. Sure about that, are you? Look at it this way. You've got your mother to look after you and Mary Poppins and Constable Jones and me. Who looks after your father? Tell me that. When something terrible happens, what does he do? Fends for himself, he does. Who does he tell about it? No one. Don't blab his troubles at home. He just pushes on at his job, uncomplaining and alone and silent.

    Michael: He's not very silent.

Jane: Michael, be quiet. Bert, do you think father really needs our help?

Bert: Well, it's not my place to say. I only observe that a father can always do with a bit of help. Come on, I'll take you home.
