So beautiful, so cruel

This movie is the brightest of all Sono Ziwen's movies. In Japan after the earthquake and nuclear radiation, many people are homeless in the face of ruins and destroyed homes. However, the most depressing scene is not from the tents and broken cardboard boxes temporarily used for shelter, nor from the victims who have lost their loved ones, but the festering and collapse that still occurs in the families that survived after the disaster. In the film, the post-90s male and female protagonists come from such repressed families. The verses that occasionally appeared in Sono Ziwen's films once again lit up a ray of light in the wilderness-like world. Even that verse is full of sadness and despair.

"I know it, flies fall into milk, black and white at a glance; I know it, I know it. I know identity by clothing, and I know it; I know the weather, I know it, I know it; I know it when I see an apple tree. I know that I can recognize apples; the diligent and the lazy can see at a glance, and know everything except themselves. In short, I know it all. There is a big difference between a healthy face and a pale face, and I too Know; death will bring an end to all things, and everything is known to the heart, except itself."

This verse reading also appears in "The Sin of Love". The difference is that the latter's poignant poetry is in sharp contrast with the dirty picture, while the poems in this film are more like an outlet for release and self-redemption after a spiritual disaster. Many people ask why the Fukushima nuclear leak and the earthquake are used as the background, I think, this is probably the externalization of the hurricane experienced by the protagonist. In the film, the protagonist and a few supporting characters are standing alone in the devastated ruins. Everyone is so lonely and so lost.

By the time the movie played for a few minutes, the title had already popped into my head. Above the ruins, the youth with pure eyes and the girl with crystal tears, so beautiful. Although they have endured the unfair abuse that the world has inflicted on them, they have not lost their good nature. Even after the male protagonist killed the animal father and suffered a mental breakdown, he still retained a trace of kindness. He picked up a knife and wanted to use the "bonus life" to contribute to society and kill those bad people. However, in the end, he did not kill innocent people like those sociopaths. Instead, some innocent people were rescued because of his standing up. When he tried to stab the bad people, they were all stopped by a fairy tale coincidence. down. This can be seen as some kind of mysterious force that prevents him from falling and protects his last hope.

Of course, this mysterious hand is the hand of the director and screenwriter. I think, here is the style of Yuan Ziwen—a kind of anti-logical embodiment. But this time, unlike in the past, what was presented through de-logicalization was too beautiful.

After the disaster, some victims appeared near the shipyard of the male owner's house. Most of these victims lost their relatives in the disaster and became lonely. However, these people presented in the film are all true, kind and beautiful, and even risk their lives to protect the male protagonist and the hope in his heart. What impressed me deeply was that the day before the male protagonist surrendered, everyone gathered outside the house, the music played, and everyone held up their hands and danced in a circle. Isn't this scene a typical replacement for fairy tales? Actors who have played perverted killers, beast merchants, and slutty housewives are transformed into bears and Little Red Riding Hoods dancing around a bonfire in this film. This kind of beauty and simple two-dimensional image that does not exist in reality at all is in stark contrast to the despair, depression, and sin of this society. At the same time, it also shows the director's usual weird style. It's just that this time it's weird, not uncomfortable or sickening, but rather sad.

Under what circumstances will people cry, I believe there is still a glimmer of hope. Tears represent the redemption of the soul, the liberation of the soul, and the thirst for hope in the heart. Although the male protagonist in the film is almost mentally broken down, he still sheds tears, which also shows that he is not incurable, while the female protagonist, even though she has experienced so much dark and terrifying mental torture, still sheds crystal clear tears, but she still sheds tears. So simply yearning for a better future, but also after learning that the male protagonist committed a crime, he persuaded him to surrender himself. This girl, you can see the injuries she has suffered from her body, but you can't see a trace of perverted viciousness. It's almost a fairytale miracle again. This miracle, as mentioned above, also reveals an almost impossible beauty. When we read fairy tales, we may believe in the beauty metaphors in fairy tales. But when some things that have suffered bad luck and destruction still retain their pure and unblemished beauty, these beauty have turned into thorns of roses, piercing our hearts and making people want to cry.

Even with all the ruins and scars, I still hesitated when I was about to pull the pistol that appeared in the washing machine. I completely lost my principles, my world view had to change because of this, I found every reason to live for me, I didn't turn myself in, I didn't die. I know everything, except myself. In any case, as long as the future is uncertain, there is hope. The ruined home submerged in water, half exposed to the water, as long as it has not completely sunk, there is still hope for the future. I believed so uncertainly, swayingly, living better than dying.
