This history can be understood through the movie. This is a history of the Cold War, a period of "abnormal" years. What else is there to say?

The filming is otherwise mediocre, and the dark tones, heavy music, and dark buildings all make it look depressing. The director set this up, probably to create a dignified atmosphere to express the plot of the movie. Only in this case, the audience looks a little uncomfortable.
Not much to say about the actors. There are almost no main actresses in the film, they are all men.
