Catherine made this series of accidents for the sake of writing books, but she was able to keep herself out of it many times by virtue of her grasp of people's hearts and human nature. When the dead died, the tears she left must be sincere, but she still couldn't let it go. Come out of this dead end, kill people, kill people in order to make life more "wonderful" or make their stories more "selling", and stimulate their own "self" hidden deep inside. What came back was the bloodthirsty "instinct" of human beings, but when the "self" appeared, she felt very sad, and the people around her left one by one, and the departure was caused by herself. So she is immersed in the two, but the game is also played. She is in charge of it all, but she is also deeply bound by it all. So at the end of the movie, when Nick says, just have sex, and keep doing it. She was "bewitched" and let go of the ice pick.
Maybe this is the start of another "bestseller" for Katherine, or, maybe, the start of another game. If all this has been her "instinct", then the tragedy will continue and go on over and over again. until she is old.
