The film tells the story of a group of survivors of a plane crash who fell into the icy wilderness of Alaska, surrounded by wolves, and struggled to survive. After the plane crashed, seven people survived, but they found themselves in the wolves' sphere of influence. They had to deal with the freezing cold while fighting the wolves. They tried to escape the wolf's grip, and on the way, they died one by one. Some were sick, some fell into the valley and died, and more were attacked and bitten by wolves. In short, they are basically dead without a whole body, buried in the belly of a wolf.
When there were only three people left, a buddy suddenly gave up. He sprained his foot, could barely walk, and lost the will to survive. He declined the kindness of his companions to help him move forward, and decided to sit by the river and wait to die. The remaining two continued on, the wolves came in pursuit again, and another fell into the river and drowned.
In this way, only the male protagonist is left. He was a widowed old man, and his wife died of illness, so he took a job in an oil field in Alaska, away from everything and hurt alone. The day before boarding the plane, he missed his deceased wife, and he almost lost his mind and committed suicide. But in the fight against the wolves after the plane crash, he was very tenacious, and he didn't give up even if it was just himself. When his last companion drowned, he tried unsuccessfully to save him, and he stood soaked by the river, sighing and scolding God. He said that God, you have a kind of spirit, let Lao Tzu see your existence. But no response. So he continued to walk on his own. Finally exhausted, he knelt on the ground and lined up the purses of the victims, looking at photos of them and their families. I thought he was going to give up.
At this time, the wolves gathered around under the leadership of the wolf head. It was only then that he discovered that he had escaped for so long and had lost so much energy that he finally escaped to the wolf's den. Damn, it's really exhausted, played by fate, there is no hope, no reinforcements, no audience, no witnesses. At the end of the movie, the old man wrapped one of his hands with glass slag, and wrapped a knife in the other, rushing towards the wolf's head.
That's when the subtitles appear. Never leave the cinema or close the movie when you see the subtitles, because there is one last shot after that. The wolf's head was finally killed, and the old man lay in a pool of blood next to the wolf's head, whose life and death were uncertain.
There is a poem that is repeatedly mentioned in this movie:
Once more into the fray
Into the last good fight I will ever know
Live and die on this day
Live and die on this day
I like it very much. For days I was playing back the movie scene and the poem in my head. I try to translate a bit,
the body's trip insurance
in upholding pay a war
not know for future generations
of life and death stand here
probably only be considered a literal translation, not obtaining the essence.
I admit I cried when I saw the end. Those who are in good times may live in splendor, high-spirited and unstoppable. But not giving up in the face of failure is what I admire. Heaven and earth are not benevolent, and all things are dogs. I understand very well the feeling of the male protagonist scolding the sky. Personal suffering, nature doesn't care at all. Fuji may not come to Tailai, perhaps a greater ordeal will follow. Just like the inescapable wolves, the never-ending rush. And all this, no one knows, and no one cares. Under similar circumstances, giving up may be a justifiable choice, and insisting may only lead to unnecessary sacrifices. But I just won't give up, I just want to persevere to the end. Do it when you know it can't be done, just once more time into the fray.
The film is very reminiscent of Jack London's novel Love of Life. Because of the same theme: I don't want to die, I will never give up. Yeah, I don't want to die, no one can let me die, not even God, not God. You let me die, why the fuck are you? Even if God plays me to death, I'm going to fight to the end. Even if I am invincible and will inevitably fail in the end, I will fight desperately to the last moment. If I'm going to die today, then I'm going to die hard too. I live and die on this day.
