behind the scenes
The film's story is based on the Greek myth of the poet and musician Orpheus who went to the underworld to find his dead wife. Buzz Luhrmann, who is also the director and producer, said: "It was a Myths about idealism and growing up make us recognize the things in life that are out of our control, that is, the demise of lovers and the non-existence of relationships. In the myth of Orpheus, you are either destroyed by misfortune or you enter the underworld to learn Face misfortune and mature through this experience."
In "Moulin Rouge", the famous Australian director Luhrmann followed his "Red Curtain" drama style, and this film is also related to "Dancing Heroes" and "Dancing Country Heroes" previously directed. Romeo and Juliet is also known as the "Red Curtain Trilogy". "We created a simple story based on a well-known myth and placed it in an exaggerated world," Luhrmann explained. "The Hero of the Dance takes place in the world of ballroom dancing, Romeo and Juliet." The story takes place on the beaches of Verona, while our third film takes place in the Moulin Rouge nightclub in 1899. Most films put the audience in a sleep state so they can peek into reality while we are in In the film, the audience is constantly awakened, reminding them that they are watching a movie. In "Heroes of the Dance", we use dance to remind, in "Romeo and Juliet", it is the 400-year-old Shakespeare language, and in this film, We chose music and songs. Essentially, Moulin Rouge is a musical, maybe an opera, but in the end, all the songs tell a story.”
After determining the creative direction, Luhrmann immediately led co-screenwriter Craig Pierce and art director Kathryn Martin to a field trip to Paris. While working on the outline of the story, they conducted meticulous research on the history of the time, from cancan dance, From the aristocratic painter Toulouse-Lautrec to the writers and journalists who recorded first-hand accounts of the nightclub. As they learned more about the people, places and cultures in the story, they finally understood why the Moulin Rouge was a place where people from all walks of life, from the aristocracy and the rich to workers, artists and bohemians, came together to have fun. Pierce said: “The Moulin Rouge was the equivalent of Studio 54, the legendary nightclub in New York in the late 1970s, where the powerful and the young, the beauties and the paupers mingled, and it was this idea that led Chandler (owner of the Moulin Rouge) to create A woman's palace, where the cancan dance is nothing less than a hot
strip and dance." While Luhrmann and Pierce finished the script, art director Catherine Martin was also incorporating Paris experience into the film. In the art design of the film, in order to create a lively world in the film, Martin fully embodies the "red curtain" style. She said: "One of the characteristics of 'Red Curtain' films is that they borrow some classic films, and in Moulin Rouge, this characteristic is reflected in hairstyles and clothing, including Marlene Dede in Blue Angels. Leigh, Rita Hayworth in Gilda, and Cabaret."
True, music and song play a vital role in the characters and story, but musicals are long outdated in order to appeal to contemporary audiences. , Luhrmann had to find another way to get the actor to sing the story. Producer Fred Byron believes that Luhrmann has created a new kind of musical, saying: "In traditional Hollywood musicals, the actors' songs are pre-recorded, and our actors dare to directly Singing in front of the camera, Buzz strives to create the feeling that singing is acting, and the audience won't be taken away from the film's story by singing, because the character's inner voice has been transformed into notes and melody."
