The beginning of the story should be like this, they set fire to kill Aretha in the church, and the brazier collapsed, causing a fire. The fire spread throughout the town, killing everyone.
But they have been reluctant to admit this fact and stubbornly believe that they are still alive. One can see that Christ Bella, her aunt, was about 30 years old when Aretha burned to death more than 30 years ago, and 30 years later when Ross saw her she was still 30 years old because she died. Age is forever fixed.
Another point that proves this conclusion is that when Christopher and the male police officer entered Silent Hill, the male police officer told him that the air of Silent Hill was full of poisonous ash all year round, which was not suitable for human survival. Alessa's resentment grew deeper and deeper, filling the entire town. The church is the last belief of this group of pagans, and Aretha couldn't get in, so she used Ross to bring her into the church for revenge. Rose, Sybil, and Sharon are all dead. When they were in a car accident, that's why they entered Silent Hill, a strange place full of dead people.
At the end, although Rose returned home with her daughter, she was obviously in a different space from her husband. They couldn't see each other, the space where Ross was surrounded by fog all the year round, but the world where Christopher was was had bright sunshine.
Another point worth mentioning is that Sharon opened her eyes in Ross's arms and glanced at the dark side of Aretha. After returning, Sharon was full of ghosts and had a strange expression, which did not rule out the possibility that Aretha's dark side merged with her.
