There were a lot of blockbuster films in the summer of 2011. If you put a science fiction thriller movie on the theme of father-son family relationship and children's friendship at this time, what do you say you are going to do? Didn't you deliberately want to lose money? If you succeed, Captain Jack doesn’t need to dance knives and shoot guns by the fountain; Magneto doesn’t need to suck submarines; Hal Jordan doesn’t need to fight parallax monsters.......... As a result, "Super 8" received double word of mouth at the box office.
"Super 8" succeeded for many reasons. Some people say that it doesn't mention much about the plot during its promotion, which increases the mystery of the film and can attract young audiences; some people say that JJ emphasizes the film's tribute to ET and the third type of contact, which can attract nostalgic people. Middle-aged and elderly people; some people say that it does not have much investment and it is easy to collect costs... But I personally think that the success of the film is entirely due to the director's understanding of the audience and the excellent performance of the small actors. It is these that can evoke the audience's nostalgia for the past and resonate.
Really, it has absolutely nothing to do with the story!
If you don't believe it, come and see it: the film begins in a small town, and the protagonist is a group of children who want to make a movie. On an ordinary night, a small truck crashed into a truck, a tragedy happened, and the children who were shooting the movie just witnessed all this and heard the last words of the owner. After the crash, strange things began to happen in the town. Soon after, the protagonist discovered that the camera had captured the alien at that time, and then... (details of the plot are omitted) The alien went home with the "help" of the child, and everything was over.
After watching the movie, you will find that the plot of this film is simply made up of an old movie. The only idea is to take the extraterrestrial Super 8 camera, which can bring a little nostalgia to the film.
But it is such a story that can move the audience. Just ask, when you were a child, did you ever have a desire for "fantasy things"? Don’t you yearn for something extraordinary that happened in your home that day? Don’t you yearn to meet an alien in the wasteland that day? Don’t you yearn for a chance to take an adventure with your friends that day? Don't you yearn for the opportunity to "save" the world that day?
Now that you are mature, you will disagree with these things, but you once did not. I'm sure this is what you once thought.
And when all these seemingly unrealistic "dreams" are all gathered in a movie, would you like this movie? In my opinion, "Super 8" is like this. The little protagonist is the bearer of our ideals. We long for the slightly bleak beginning, we long for indestructible friendship and ignorant love, and we long for reunion with our family in the disaster. Most importantly, we hope that we can solve problems by ourselves, have no dangers, want everyone to be safe, and want a happy ending.
JJ is good at telling stories, but this ability was not used in this film. He used another method to make the film outstanding, which is to let the audience understand the characters and substitute their feelings.
I found that I had substituted emotions. I found that I got the childhood I longed for through the protagonist of the film.
