The film tells the story of criminal Luke's rebellion against authority. Luke was jailed for two years in chains for tearing down a parking meter while drunk. He was a cold-hearted hero who was always considered a hero by inmates during his time in prison. When he received the news of his mother's death, he tried unsuccessfully to escape from prison time after time, and was finally shot and killed by the guards. The "rope" that escaped with him was taken back to the prison, replacing Luke's hero status among the prisoners.
The director used extremely rich metaphors in the film, and used the method of montage photography to create the expression method of social violence films in the future. This is one of Paul Newman's best performances, other actors are also very prominent, the scene of eating eggs and "our problem is the failure of communication" has become a classic scene and classic lines.
