Howard Hughes broke six ribs of the collar and suffered extensive third-degree burns in the accident in the middle of the film. Many people believe that the massive use of morphine and painkillers in his treatment caused Howard Hughes' later opiate addiction. His signature moustache was left after this accident to cover the scar on his upper lip.

He was the first American to have a fortune of more than one billion dollars. He is a famous playboy, and well-known women who have an affair with him include Katharine Hepburn (Cate Blanchett), Bette Davis, Gene Tierney, Ava Gardner (Kate Beckinsale) and so on.

As a tycoon in Las Vegas, Howard Hughes has great political and economic influence in Nevada, and can even affect the outcome of the US presidential election. Fearing nuclear radiation, Howard Hughes also tried to provide US Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon with $1 million each to stop their underground nuclear tests in Nevada. Howard Hughes's assistant did not actually pay bribes, but told him that Lyndon B. Johnson refused to accept bribes, and Nixon did not contact him.

Before the 1960 US presidential election, Nixon was revealed that his brother had accepted Howard Hughes' loan of 200,000 and another 5,000 US dollars and never repaid the election.

After the 1950s, he lived in seclusion. At this stage, Howard Hughes became addicted to multiple drugs such as codeine and diazepam, and became weaker and weaker. Many biographies and novels say that he used milk bottles to make urine and tissue boxes to make shoes. However, it is reported that he used tissue boxes to make shoes to "protect" himself only once when the toilet leaked. He insisted on putting paper towels when holding things so that he could be separated from germs. Howard Hughes contracted syphilis when he was very young. During the tertiary syphilis stage, he had small blisters on his hands. It is generally believed that doctors had warned him not to shake hands with others at this stage. Howard Hughes made this difference. The habit of shaking hands with others lasted a lifetime. Howard Hughes also burned all his clothes. Some people think this was because he was worried that he was afraid that syphilis bacteria would be parasitic in his clothes.

On April 5, 1976, 70-year-old Howard Hughes died on a plane from his Mexican residence to the Methodist Hospital in Houston. Years of negligence made his face unrecognizable, and the FBI finally identified it as Howard Hughes through his fingerprints. The autopsy believed that he died of kidney failure, but there was still a lethal dose of codeine and a large amount of diazepam in his blood. A broken needle was also found on his arm. He was also found to suffer from severe malnutrition. Howard Hughes was eventually buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.

The Aviator quotes

  • Howard Hughes: What about the girls? How are they in the bomb department?

Johnny Meyer: Well, let's put it this way. It'll be a regular boob buffet. I don't think the gentlemen from the Air Corps will have any trouble scoring tonight.

  • Ava Gardner: Look, you got girls stashed all over town. You got a damn harem just at the Bel-Air. Why don't you marry one of your bungalow girls?

Howard Hughes: Those are employees. I'm not gonna marry an employee. Jesus Christ, how would that look?
