ashamed in his own abyss

Why watch Steve McQueen's Shame? If the answer is outside of Fassbender's big bird and "sex addiction" gimmicks, you must be lying. "Shame" is not the best movie I've seen this year, but it is the best filmed in the "sex addiction" theme. There is a magic power that can make people linger in a daze in the ending song after the movie ends. Generally speaking, a movie with this magic power is a good movie.
After the curtain call, I found out that the most beautiful thing in the film is not the big bird and sex, but Uncle Fa's face mixed with sadness and despair. It is calm and ruthless but full of affection. There is nowhere to hide in shame, and it is conceivable that under such a divided face, what kind of divided soul is hidden. This is the most successful place. If after reading it like "Sex Addiction Diary", the long legs of the heroine are all in your mind, it is over.

"Hunger" is the repeated restraint of appetite, and "Shame" is the unabashed desire. The first feeling the movie gave me was cold, very cold. Brandon walked through the cold wind-blown streets of New York again and again with an expressionless face, and glanced at the enchanting bodies of different postures under him. Sadly, for him, there was no essential difference between the two. Because he is a sex addict.
You can be addicted to tobacco, alcohol, or have all kinds of eccentricities that are not on the table. There are always people who can tolerate you or even sympathize with you and pity you, but sex addiction is always not respected. You say that you are promiscuous just because you are sick, and everyone will think that this is a dishonest excuse, so those sex addicts can only live a life that is divided between day and night, on the one hand suppressing their desires and one On the other hand, because of this repression, more desires arise. Some people love to cry, cry when they are happy, cry when they are angry, cry when they are sad, cry when they are excited. Not to mention it can be understood that if a pair of eyes has been used to shed tears, then when it wants to smile, it will inevitably be powerless.
"Shame" has a small pattern, and it is a movie that belongs to the "now". Its camera is always aimed at Brandon and his sister, Hessi, for a longitudinal discussion of their current situation. There are no antecedents and no consequences, each character is already scarred as soon as they appear, there is no magic of "XX years later", time is still, the characters always stay in the stage of suffering, the camera does not bring healing but Probing directly into the wound, after shooting a bloody piece, it hastily. Such a depth directly leads to the audience's ignorance of the character itself. Why does Brandon suffer from sex addiction? Why did Hessi come to New York to join her brother? What's with the scar on her wrist? These issues that help bring the audience closer to the characters are not within the scope of the director's discussion, so the whole film is filled with a fog-like sense of estrangement, which is consistent with the estrangement of the characters in the film. So, in the process of watching the movie, we are not in the abyss of Brandon and Hesse, but peep out in our own abyss.
So I will feel very moved and cherish every bit of the fire light that comes out of the ice cave. In the first part of the film, Sisi and Brandon were waiting for the subway together. Sisi helped Brandon to remove the lint from his shoulders, and Brandon stepped aside.
B: "Leave it."
S: "You have a fluff."
B: "I like it there."
After that, Brandon took down the fluff and put it on his sister's shoulder as a prank, and Xixi broke him The trick is fun like a child.
"Like a child", this is actually what both brothers and sisters have been pursuing. There are not so many unpredictable human hearts and shameful desires, and it is as simple as a child to get along. I have always believed that people with psychological defects somewhere, There must be more simplicity and sensitivity elsewhere. It's a pity that the farthest thing from you is the past. Brandon and Hesse, as they attempt to pursue something far behind at the juncture of time, face nothing but disappointment. Afterwards, Hessi begged Brandon to watch her performance. She got the promise and got candy more like a child. She stomped her feet coquettishly, snuggled up to Brandon and said "Yay" excitedly. This is the whole film. The warmest segment in the movie. When I look back at this after watching the movie, I really can't describe the sourness and sadness in words.

Brandon and Hessi's relationship is like this, Hessi wants to talk, but Brandon can't talk, he can only fuck, when faced with a sister who can't fuck and wants to talk, Brandon can't do anything .
In the performance, Hessi kept shouting to Brandon through a sad song: "I need you I need you." Brandon felt it, but because of his own limitations he couldn't respond to such feelings, so he wept, This is already the best effort, I think he should have decided to take good care of the friendship between brother and sister. As a result, Hessi went to his boss's bed after stepping down, or at his house. Brandon was angry because he felt Betrayed, one is his sister, the other is a family boss, which makes him feel ashamed.
This is a vicious circle. Brandon feels ashamed and wants to vent through sex, but such venting will only make him feel more ashamed, so his attitude towards Hesse is even worse. To save, the tighter the wrapping of Brandon, the more the mutual torture between the two escalated. The last 3P of the film is the most painful and desperate passion scene in the whole film. The camera is brutally frozen on Brandon's almost distorted face, and at the same time, it is the arteries cut by Hesse and the overflowing blood. Her blood is her tears.

The plot of the movie is actually not strong. In just one and a half hours, there are many long shots that have nothing to do with the plot, but these seemingly disordered long shots actually play a role in promoting emotions, and they also get rid of them. A pointless criticism. For example, there was a scene where Brandon was walking on the street. When he looked up, he saw a passionate man and woman in the floor-to-ceiling window of the hotel. He stared at him inexplicably. Then there is a scene where Brandon and a blonde fight each other in front of the hotel's floor-to-ceiling windows, so his previous actions are explained, he feels that the figure is both familiar and unfamiliar, he wants to see his appearance but can't see clearly , there is he and not him.
Whether a movie is hollow or not depends on whether plots like this have a voice of their own, and Shame, in my opinion, is a cry, but halfway through because of shame. Brandon and Hessi are not so much a role as a state, and when this state is out of the pathology and becomes a normal state, has the relationship between people reached the most dangerous moment?

  • Sissy Sullivan: We're not bad people. We just come from a bad place.

  • Sissy Sullivan: I'm trying, I'm trying to help you.

Brandon Sullivan: How are you helping me, huh? How are you helping me? How are you helping me? Huh? Look at me. You come in here and you're a weight on me. Do you understand me? You're a burden. You're just dragging me down. How are you helping me? You can't even clean up after yourself. Stop playing the victim.

Sissy Sullivan: I'm not playing the victim. If I left, I would never hear from you again. Don't you think that's sad? Don't you think that's sad? You're my brother.
