A strong literary film atmosphere, unpopular European films, full of nostalgia

In my opinion, this film cannot be viewed purely as GAY.
The film is full of the atmosphere of European literary films, long but not tedious, so that people can watch it slowly without getting bored.
Although the film did not appear until the second half of the male lead, the first half also rendered the atmosphere very well. Walter's dim room, coupled with the limited picture quality, I always feel like I'm watching an old Hong Kong movie in the 1980s~ It's very graceful and nostalgic.
We should note that the strange and wonderful friendship between these two men was placed in the special environment of war. The smoke of gunpowder rises, and the ruthless war has made Europe and Continent all over the world, and people have become more interdependent. The friendship between Walter and Yang Lu was also precious when the smoke was everywhere.
Some might say that officers assaulted boys. Everyone has their own opinions. I personally said that these are the needs of the drama, so we will not investigate so much (but I heard that it is adapted from a true story~)
I forgot how many times I watched this film, and the next few times It's not as interesting as it was at first, but my heart still trembled for some plots. Dancing, chocolate, going to the plane, driving...but what's left at the end?
In the story, Yang Lu had those beautiful memories, but the things that really witnessed those beautiful emotions disappeared. In the end, only the buttons with military seams, photos, and the pair of sunglasses were left, which made Yang Lu lucky after many years. Look at the beauty and difficulty of this changing world through the glasses of your beloved officer.
I just saw someone commenting on the metaphors in the movie, and I thought it was amazing, because I always watch the movie without going into in-depth analysis. Yang Lu finally got rid of the gun and so on. What are the hidden meanings, and chocolate... But I just noticed the plane in the sea after watching it. Yang Lu found the plane and ran into the turbulent sea to have a look. , then went to see it with Jean, then with Walter, and finally the plane was dismantled (but it doesn't seem to be completely dismantled). I think that the plane may mean that Yang Lu will have a relationship with someone related to the army, and the fact that the plane is taken down means that fate has arrived. I wonder if any of the students noticed what the director was trying to express here?
