It tells the story of a group of aliens who kidnapped many earthlings and put them in a fictional city for experiments.
Experimental purpose: divide what makes human unique (because they only have collective consciousness), and save themselves (this logic is not very clear). So the film's purpose is to demonstrate - to explore the philosophical question of personal identity.
Experimental method: constantly exchange and reconstruct each person's memory to see if the memory is the whole of soul.
Experimental result: memory does not define a person. Mr. Hand has John's memory, but he is still just an outlier; Emma has been changed many times, but he still likes John (of course, it is not ruled out that Mr. Hand is too ugly, and John is a public lover).
The background of the story is easily reminiscent of Descartes' Devil or Putnam's "Brain in a Vat". The former is pure idealism, while the latter even has a scientific basis. The advantage of this film is that the central idea is prominent, and the gothic black style directly affects the famous "Matrix" in film history.
But there are also a lot of flaws:
1. Such a powerful alien, tying people to a satellite, can tune out all things at will, as for things like using needles and daggers?
2. Since everyone doesn't change their memories every day, why is there no response when there are more buildings around everyone? And questions like John's arm scar should abound, right? In addition, no one has questioned the days when there is no day and no way out of the city?
3. You said that memory is not everything, well, I agree. So what are you talking about? Just say "it's not here" and be done?
4. The "eyes kill" big PK, obviously the protagonist is handsome.
5. The spiral circles that appear many times are not explained. The meaning of the detective's tying of shoelaces is unclear.
In short, I think Yu does not hide her flaws, so it's just average.
