Kurosawa took three hours to show us three kinds of people from the Warring States Period in Japan: bandits, farmers, and samurai. Especially for the latter two, they are rich in color and lifelike. With my low skill, I can’t match them. Together, one can only reminisce about this hand-held work from the perspective of the youngest of the seven samurai, Katsushiro.
Katsushiro's appearance can make people easily labeled as a "juvenile". When Kiku Chiyo saw Katsushiro for the first time, he reprimanded him as a "younger", a treasured sword in fresh clothes, and a young and passionate blood. We can guess his previous life with certainty: Born into a famous family, he has been in contact with the outside world since he was young. At the young age, he has been weak and has traveled all over the country. The most indispensable is chivalry and passion. Confused. At this time, Katsushiro met Kanbingbei. Just imagine, after witnessing Kanbingbei's selflessness and bravery in saving children, how could he not regard Kanbingbei as a perfect idol, and he became a teacher. Is expected. Kanbei was the one who introduced him to this journey that changed his life.
Afterwards, Kanbingbei's humility, wit and other personality charms in recruiting other samurai for the farmers made Katsushiro unable to extricate himself, and fell deeply into his dream of a great warrior. Of course Kanbingbei saw it and saw this. The young man’s adoration of himself, his pursuit of becoming a true samurai, a person who has always had a complicated mentality towards his younger generation who is very similar to him, hopes that he can grow up better than himself under his own guidance, but that’s right. With some unique behaviors of young people, he can only helplessly smile. Kanbei originally didn't want Katsushiro to become one of the seven samurai, not only because of his ability, but also because he knew that his immature mentality was not up to this important task, and constantly refused Katsushiro's request to participate in the battle.
Kanbei: In this way, three people are missing.
Goro: Three people? Isn't it two people?
Kanbei: Ah, I can't take my children.
Katsushiro: Teacher!
Kanbei: I know, I know, I know what you have to say. I did this when I was your age...
What more does Katsushiro say.
Kanbei: You think, exercise martial arts, go to battle, and then become the lord of one city and one place...
Katsushiro bowed his head.
Kanbei: But, thinking about it this way, unknowingly, you see... the hair is graying like this. As a result, Hou's parents were no longer there, there were no relatives, and there was no land on which to sleep.
Katsushiro was speechless, yes, Kanbingwei poked the abacus in his heart, but it is so easy to wake up in a dream, it is better to be silent. After the intercession of the samurai, Katsushiro got on the last train of the seven samurai, along with Kikuchiyo.
Kiku Chiyo, among the seven samurai, the influence on Katsushiro is second only to Kanbei. The contradictory role of the samurai as a farmer and the peasant as a samurai. After being drunk, he stole the genealogy and added himself to a 13-year-old child. The name already clearly reveals his low self-esteem and yearning for the samurai. Kikuchiyo’s entry into this group is also a credit to Katsushiro. Could it be that Katsushiro boldly "given" the name Kikuchiyo, the name of this thirteen-year-old samurai. I believe that other samurai would never accept such a brave man without such a bravery. Sufficient, even so, the banner drawn after Heihachi clearly distinguished Kiku Chiyojing from the other six samurai, but regarded him as a "happy fruit" different from other farmers.
Kikuchiyo and Katsushiro are so like they are trying to learn Bushido and become a real samurai. The difference is that no matter how immature Katsushiro is, he will always be regarded as a samurai even if he dare not kill. Fighting the enemy bravely, dying on the battlefield, in the end, it was just the triangle that drifted away from the six circles. It was not approved by Kanbingwei, and even the grave head after death was different from those of the samurai.
So did Katsushiro get the "trial" he wanted? There is no doubt that he succeeded in this regard, leaving many in this village for the first time, the first murder, the first war, and the first love. Even if Shino had her long hair cut off, it would undoubtedly be wonderful and magical for Katsushiro who accidentally touched the body of the opposite sex for the first time, and for the farmer’s daughter Shino, Katsushiro satisfies all her fantasies about the opposite sex. , Distinguished status, kind-hearted, delicate and considerate, the beauty and romance that the two love is no different from other young men and women, but the biggest obstacle is also the insurmountable obstacle is the tacky birth gap. The film reminds us of the samurai at all times. The fundamental gap with the identity of a farmer is cold and sad. Shino undoubtedly knows this better than Katsushiro, but he has no hesitation in giving her the most precious virginity to this ignorant boy who has not had time to give her a promise on the eve of the decisive battle. Presumably the girl knew that this was the last chance, the chance to keep herself in Yiren's heart forever, regardless of whether the samurai survived after dawn, this relationship was destined to end.
It's over, Katsushiro's enemies are down, Katsushiro's comrades are down, Heihachi, Goro, Kuzura, and Kikuchiyo are down, standing in front of the grave, Kanbei's side, looking at the cheerful peasants in the field Men, Katsushiro didn't have the joy that he should have after victory.
Kanbei: This battle... we were defeated after all. The ones who won... are the farmers, not us.
Katsushiro can finally understand why when he first met Kanbei, such a good samurai would say that he had always been defeated. This defeat is not a crime of war. The sorrow of the samurai lies in their inability to choose their own path. Bushido tells them how to kill the enemy and how to walk proudly in the world, but it cannot tell them how to choose.
Then Shino appeared, with a hat, no different from other peasant women, looked at Katsushiro a few times, went into the field, sang loudly and planted seedlings, no different from other peasant women, oh, she was crying.
Katsushiro didn't say anything, couldn't say anything, he could only look at Shino, not knowing how long he could watch.
Katsushiro finally wants to understand something. He can understand that he is a samurai. His path is still too long. When he understands that he is just a samurai, his hair will probably be gray.
