What are the illogical plots and flashy pictures for?

From a reflective point of view, Hugo is an extraordinary film for me. It made me deeply understand in the first 5 minutes: what kind of film I don't want to watch. When the camera moves in the noisy train station created by special effects, Hugo is chased by the police, the policeman falls into the crowd with a lot of arrogance, the female gardener with innocent eyes is watching the lame policeman, and a man and woman are having funny interactions through pet dogs. , I suddenly realized that my gaze was focused on an extremely illusory stage. I may have seen all the characters and foreshadowings of the film, but I could not see the truth as an audience pursued and would like to believe. For romantic films, I want to see the unique details that belong to the ancient city of Paris. For drama films, I want to see three-dimensional characters and their sympathetic positions; for fantasy films, I want to see children's adventures in a novel world, and for action Comedy, I want to see all kinds of nervous smiles like Jackie Chan's movies... But there is nothing, everything in front of me is so flashy and empty, like a pile of cutscenes, without any lens entering my heart. What is it for the movie to be satisfied with the fairy tale style story and the splicing of colorful pictures? From beginning to end, I have a hasty feeling of being fooled. I struggled to escape from the theater, but because I invited my friends to watch this film, I was forced to entangle on the spot...

Victor Hugo, the literary master whom everyone cares about The city of Paris, which is very charming with him: there is

nothing, don't worry.

The Gothic Xiao Zhengtai that everyone cares about:

It's really unflattering, she has no expression, and her face is dirty... It's far worse than Harry Potter. Maybe you can play a cold-blooded vampire in the future... Different people have different opinions.
By the way, the heroine also has no characteristics. Except for the old man’s adopted grandson, he can bring Hugo in. It has no driving force on the plot. It just sets off Hugo’s awkward character... and there is no love...

everyone. Concerned about the 3D and visual effects and steampunk:

fake 3D, the characters are small pieces of 2D floating on the background. Understand all of it.
All the backgrounds have a strong CG flavor, and I suspect that all the shots are studio shots. The CG special effects of Paris have arrived home.
There are also a few special effects and editing that are not so rough as they are too weird.
There is no fantasy drama in the true sense, and the design of the clock tower and the studio is not distinctive. What if the train station does have a steam locomotive? The fake "steampunk" feels illusory.
There is no action scene. The plot of the blunt police catching the thief unrelated to the plot is repeated. . . The rest is basically Hugo, a dead fish-eyed kid with a poker face, wandering between clocks and watches, and talking to all the characters. Quite boring...
So the whole film is boring with the pink and golden scenes and the endless fantasy background music. What more can you ask for the senses?

The idiot plot that everyone cares about is the plot that is called the core of the movie: (a lot of spoilers below)

Hugo, a small watchmaker, has strong mechanical production capabilities and was taught by his father before his death. He has been since his father died. While stealing at the train station, he continued his father's work. His life was very difficult. The police would arrest him every day, and in this burglary, his precious engineering drawings were snatched by the old man.

This beginning is logical and exciting. So according to normal logic, the story should be like this. Hugo finally regained his treasure under the forces that killed his father and the obstruction of the evil old man, and finally made the machine to help him understand his father and end his hardship. Life and brought surprises to his life...

However, the plots that follow are often unexpected, and make people want to ask "What the hell is this for?" In this film, Hugo's father died inexplicably, perhaps fundamentally. No one has killed his father. All the forces blocking Hugo's advancement are just a foolish policeman. Hugo's expedition did not have any mission connected with his life experience. The abilities Hugo inherited from his father did not help him open up his own world. Since Hugo completed his father's posthumous work in the half of the film, Hugo has never made machinery. The seeds buried at the beginning sank into the belly of the fish.

What’s even more funny is that the policemen who chased Hugo with all their strength did not have any personal reasons to chase Hugo. I think it was entirely to delay the time of the film. Hugo’s expedition was so smooth that there was almost no plot ups and downs at all, so whenever When Hugo was approaching the answer, the police showed up and chased him around. The whole train station began to perform farce.
In particular, the story that puzzled me was that the police accidentally arrested a poor child in front of Hugo, locked him up as a thief, and finally sent him to the carriage in the bureau. This move scared Hugo not shallow. He kept watching the child leave... Then, what happened to the child? Why didn't our protagonist save the child? Why is he not guilty? Why are the police not punished (even if it is from heaven)? Hugo’s only chance to confront the police head-on and solve his own destiny was given up. Yes, the protagonist chose to ignore the villain and this destiny that had been laying for a long time—ignoring...what is the story of this story?
What makes me most unbelievable is that such a policeman actually harvested his love in the same train station. And in the same way, this love has nothing to do with the protagonist. There was another love story in the train station. In short, there were many logical and tender warmth narratives in this train station with poor special effects. It was as incredible as the police let go of Hugo because they were in a good mood at the end of the story. Everything is not connected to each other, has nothing to do with each other!

So, let's go back to the main topic of the film, so what does the film want to say? Yes, the film has its purpose. In the second half, Hugo's life is dedicated to another person: the evil old man who appeared on the scene. It turns out that the old man is a declining film director. He wants to forget the glory of the past. At the moment when the robot left by Hugo's father was finally repaired by Hugo, he drew the old man's movie sketches. So the later exploration of history by Hugo and the old man's granddaughter turned into sympathy and tribute to the early filmmakers. The two children looked dumbly at the old film being screened (showing us that these early film fragments really took up a long time in the film), and felt that they had a magical connection with the world. The old man faced his achievements, Hugo was adopted by the old man, and the story ended. It turns out that Hugo's suffering is to make a wedding dress for the old man! Even though Hugo’s father is also an admirer of the old man, it cannot be tolerated to cede the protagonist’s fate to a third party. The filmmakers are self-pity for the film, intending to promote the charm of the filmmakers themselves, but with the help of innocent children's curiosity and magic skills, they expand themselves in a manner similar to adultery, cutting the integrity of the film's narrative, and betraying the film itself.

Perhaps the director would argue: Didn’t you find that the story has a dark thread on the anti-war theme? Hugo's father died at least during the war. The police lost a leg in the war. This may be the reason why he struggled to catch the thief, and because of the understanding of the flower girl who lost her relatives in the war, he gave up catching Yu. Guo's persistence, as well as the old man, lost his career because of the war. Aren't these all related to each other?

So what? Even a story doesn't go well, do you still expect the audience to find any humanistic care?

We say that a movie can be based on structure and sound and painting, or it can be based on narration. The combination of the two is definitely the best. It can express opinions rigorously and express feelings romantically, but I have never seen it before. The plot So loose and illogical, so imprecise, so incomprehensible movie as a whole, even though it has pink gold clocks and (weakly shaped) magical robots, and lovely names like Paris and Hugo, but it It does not make us feel the experience of love and adventure, it does not take us into the soul of a person, it is not even a story. I don't quite understand the various settings of this movie "what are they for?"

Supplement: After posting this article, I learned that this movie is a tribute to director George Mérieux. There are "24 movie stems" in the film. The fantasy movies and the director's life in the film are real. "People who haven't watched these movies will not understand." I wonder, for this purpose, why not just make this movie a documentary? For those of us who have never watched a Mérieux movie, is Hugo's crappy adventure, which accounts for half of the story, really good for introducing this director? I still said that, a story is not going well, do you still expect the audience to find any humanistic care?

To give five stars is to pay tribute to all the residents of Inception, and to pay tribute to the perfect tone. Leaving aside the plot, just watching the dream, this is a moving film. Thank you @天燕山樵歌 for the recommendation, have you found this place that is actually similar to the fairyland bridge?

Although all I can think of is like paying tribute to the people in the movie, this film is still very warm and the soundtrack is also great. If it is not in the cinema, if it is not 3D, it will not be felt, this "artistic film"
