Based on a true story, the film takes place in 1971, when two black high schools and one white high school merge, and the football teams of the three schools must be re-formed into a mixed team. White coach Yot (Will Patton) resigns as a "personality insult", and black coach Herman Boone (Denzel Washington) takes over.
