I don't think it's an inspirational film

Everyone thinks it's an inspirational movie, I don't think it's very accurate. Although like many inspirational stories, it tells the success story of a small person from humble background, but this film does not spend much space to describe how the small person experienced the pain of failure and hard work, and it is more about describing the ups and downs in the game The ups and downs, and everyone involved directly or indirectly. The story has a deeper connotation than inspiration: sportsmanship.

Harry Vardon, who had high hopes for the British Empire, said: I came here to win a trophy. And on the face of it, Ted Ray or I should carry it off. Not for you, not for England, but for bloody pride at being the best. That's why we do this. And if Mr. Ouimet wins tomorrow, it's because he's the best, BECAUSE OF WHO HE IS. Not who his father was not how much money he's got, BECAUSE OF WHO HE BLOODY IS!

Francis attended This game is not for the pursuit of prize money. Because as an amateur, even if he wins the game, he doesn't get the bonus. Although his father taught him to make money for the family since he was a child, he still participates in this competition without prize money.
I don't want to win glory for the country. When someone told him the president was watching his game, Eddie said: We play our game, let those guys worry about theirs. The president waved to Francis and he hit the ball, Eddie said: thanks for nothing. In the whole film, the president is just an outsider who has nothing to do with the game and will only add to the chaos. He only shows up once and never again. In fact, the film is in this way to reveal the real theme: the game itself.
Not to prove myself. Although the film also describes Francis being despised by the public because of his caddie status, I think its purpose is to promote the spirit of equality in sports. Francis has been fond of golf since he was a child, and he got up in the middle of the night to practice, not because some people looked down on him, but because he liked the game.

I think the character Harry Vardon is actually the protagonist. He and Francis have a similar background and experience. In my opinion, the whole movie is the process of these two top players who have a different understanding of the game of golf than everyone else, for a single purpose: to win the game, and the process of confrontation.

And Eddie, who is also a very important character to show this theme, a kid, not for money or fame, just excited to play a game as a caddie.

So, no matter how you look at it, this should not be regarded as an inspirational movie. This is a sports movie, the theme is that sports are pure, equal, non-utilitarian, non-political, and everyone can participate.

The dialogue between Vardon and Francis once again revealed the true meaning of the film:
Vardon: That was a great game. I enjoyed it.
Francis: So did I.
Vardon: Yes you did. Congratulation on your success, you deserve it. We will play again sometime.
