This is really an esoteric movie, but it turns out that the director made "π" and "Requiem for a Dream", so it's no wonder.
Not science fiction at all, more like magic, or fantasy?
The picture is exquisite, but the nebula part is too dazzling. It is said that only 10% of the special effects are CG, so it is really amazing to be able to shoot like this.
The story has three interlaced lines, which are simply the past, the present, and the future; but this should not be the case in reality. I think it is more like a story fantasy, real life, and spiritual sublimation. The benevolent sees the benevolent and the wise sees the wisdom.
The theme is life, and the subtheme is love.
On love: Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz are successful enough to impress.
About Immortality: What Is Death? Why do people always die? What is immortality?
When a person dies and a seed is planted in a cemetery, it will take root and sprout, grow into a tree, blossom and bear fruit, and be eaten by birds. So, the dead life, will fly to the sky. The Mayans called the underworld Xbalba, where the souls of the dead are reborn. Death is a cycle, and death is eternal life. Life is complete by death.
Tom, in the line of "past/story fantasy", worked for the country and the beautiful queen, went through hardships and legends, found the mythical tree of life, coveted immortality, and turned into bushes of flowers and plants; in "present/real life" In the line, in order to save his terminally ill wife, he worked hard and approached a scientific miracle, but he was still one step behind, but he said unwillingly and painfully, "Death is just a disease, and I will definitely find an antidote"; in "Future/Spirit" In the line of "sublimation", he stuck beside the tree of life and flew to the Xbalba nebula, only to find that the tree of immortality withered, and he was at a loss - in the end, he seemed to find the answer.
In fact, the three lines above are constantly intersecting. And what is the answer? In the vision, Izzi keeps telling Tom, "Finish it", to finish the last chapter of her novel. The story has an ending, just like life. And so we see the end of the "Past/Story Fantasy" line. So we see the revision of the "current/real life" line, Tom is no longer paranoid about finding a way to heal Izzi, but tries his best to accompany her through. So we see the "future/spiritual ascension" line Tom fly out of the tree of life and reborn in the Xbalba nebula.
A reborn Tom meets Izzi, who gives him a seed. So Tom planted that seed deep in Izzi's grave.
In fact, the "reality" that really happened in the whole film is nothing more than a single line, and the final ending of this story is that Tom buried the seed deeply in Izzi's graveyard...
About immortality, you can see the geometry.
