The film is adapted from Pearl Buck's novel "The Good Earth" of the same name, which won the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize for Literature. The author himself grew up in China. His parents were missionaries. Her husband used to live in remote areas of China with poor farmers, and it was these experiences that allowed her to write this truly touching novel. This novel was the No. 1 best-selling work in the United States in 1931, when the United States was in the midst of the Great Depression. The miserable days in China described in this novel were actually comforting Americans who were struggling at that time.
