A good guy on the street, a good deed

If it weren't for the poor translation of the subtitles, I might give this film 80 points instead of the current 60 points.

Many details are incomprehensible because of the subtitles, but fortunately it does not affect the understanding of the overall plot. In fact, it is also because the plot is not complicated. Even if there are no subtitles, I believe that most people can understand the whole story if they can keep reading.

Willie is a gangster in a street gang in Mexico, and the smiling face is Willie's new little brother. The gang boss fell in love with Willie's girlfriend, forced to rape and killed her, and Willie was heartbroken.

During a robbery, the boss was about to plot against the robbed girl, and was hacked to death by Willy from behind to avenge his girlfriend. From then on, Willie began a desperate journey. The rescued girl fell in love with Willie. In order not to drag the girl down, Willie promised to send her to the border between the United States and Mexico.

On the other side, Smiley returned to the gang, and in order to show his loyalty to the gang, he led the gang to start the hunt for Willie.

On the US-Mexico border, Willie helped the little girl cross the border river when the gang arrived. Willie ran away, only to die at the muzzle of Smiley's gun.

The smiling face after the shooting stared blankly at Willie's body, because he got his first tattoo because of merit, and his fourteen-year-old face was still full of childishness.

The little girl who crossed the border called her relatives in the United States, and she was greeted by a new life that was safe and calm and no longer feared.

The style of the film is somewhat similar to Jia Zhangke's films. On the surface, it seems calm, but in fact, the current is surging. The portrayal of the social status quo of Mexico's poverty, chaos and violence is shocking. As for the description of that hazy feeling, it seems to be an understatement, but in fact, the freehand brushwork is left blank, and the aftertaste is lingering.

  • Sayra: Back home, my friend Clarissa made me see this crazy neighbor, Doña Eleanor, you know, like witchcraft? She smoked this puro, then told me with her freaky voice that I'd make it to the U.S. but not in God's hand, perhaps in the Devil's.
