A lighthearted and humorous sci-fi film
First of all, as a sci-fi film, although "Wonderful Dreams" is soft in form, it also has a lot of imagination. It is a pity that the passage of time has been a formidable enemy for the special genre of science fiction films, since it has been 25 years since the film was released. It is conceivable that most of the other elements in the film except the shooting technology are generally common in any era, at least something that can be understood and experienced; but when the wild imagination in the film became the reality of today's world The shock that science fiction films can bring to us is greatly reduced. It seems as if "semi-automatic" school time alarms and fully automatic in-room facilities have become a reality; the cosmetic surgery technique that Sam's old mother is passionate about (is that the legendary facelift?) has long been an important productive force in the Republic of Korea.
The age of the film and the similar visual sense reminded me of "Blade Runner", coupled with the influence of "2001 A Space Odyssey" before, I feel that it is not easy for a sci-fi film to have a frivolous and fast rhythm matter. The love scene of Sam and Jill brings a lot of lightness and warmth to the film; the operation of the state apparatus makes us feel the heavy taste of black humor; and Sam's dream is a kind of carefree and uninhibited flying.
Serious and deep dystopian theme
Many people refer to "Wonderful Thinking" as the movie version of "1984", and I think this kind of mention alone will excite many people. I hadn't noticed this statement before, so I was overjoyed in the first few minutes when the Flying Tigers stormed the house and took away an innocent man. The whole story is caused by a bug in sorting out information by the state department that never makes mistakes, and then the whole film continues to ridicule the long and impersonal fixed processes of those machines or state machines. It can be seen that although Sam has some dreams at first, he has almost lost his personality in the repetitive work day after day. Like other "parts", he will also bring out a set of outdated inherent ideas and typical styles of higher authorities to deal with people and things in life, until he meets the girl of his dreams.
Sam doesn't have any great ideals. He doesn't want to give back to the society like the masked man in "V for Vendetta". In the end, he just wants to eliminate demons like the hero in his dream and live a happy life with beautiful women. But the real demon is more terrifying than the Japanese samurai in the dream (as in the background of "Blade Runner", the mass import of Japanese products scares Americans), and he faces an unreachable state machine. . The engineering team that never makes mistakes, the waiters who only order food from the menu, the personnel of various national departments who take mutual shirk as a compulsory course for entry, and the most terrifying thing is the general public who live in such an environment but slowly adapt to it.
If you haven't seen the cast list of the movie or if you have seen it and forgot it, then you are lucky, because you will be shocked by the stunning appearance of an actor in the film. He was quite serious at that time and would not act. What a comedic role. I heard that the director Terry Gilliam also had a glimpse in the film. The IMDB wrote "Smoking Man at Shangri-La Towers", waiting for the judges to discover it. All in all, this is a lighthearted and serious dystopian masterpiece, highly recommended!
