Memory may be the difference with 12 monkeys.

This experimental film was the inspiration for 12 Monkeys. However, in a more commercial sci-fi film like 12 Monkeys, time travel and so on are real. Bruce Power was stuffed naked into that blue-lighted sci-fi barrel and traveled back in time to 1996. But in this movie. It's hard for me to imagine lying on a battered bamboo mat hammock, putting on an eye patch with two threads attached, getting a needle, and traveling through time.
Perhaps, men do not travel through time and space at all. It's just a story about memory.
In the era of nuclear pollution, people living underground are looking for the past and the future. The entire time and space cycle may just be a man's imagination. A beautiful woman remembering that hot Sunday before the war. The effect of memorizing into a frame by frame (in fact, the memories in our minds are more saved in the form of photos, not videos, I don’t believe you can recall the past.) So, in the memories, it becomes the one who ran to the woman man, memory is unreliable. Maybe it's just a memory of his wishful construction.
And the future, looking forward to a better future.
But this is a story about love, a love that only existed in the golden age before the war. As a child, he fell in love with a woman he had only seen once, with a panicked face, facing the dead man who ran towards him. For this woman he saw only once, he pursued his whole life. Finally fell in love with her in memory.
In the end, our man, perhaps just a lab rat, ends up dying at the hands of the jailer.
Very avant-garde film, very good sci-fi, romance.

La Jetée quotes

  • Narrator: [referring to The Woman's face] That face he had seen was to be the only peacetime image to survive the war. Had he really seen it? Or had he invented that tender moment to prop up the madness to come?

  • Narrator: He recited his lesson: because humanity had survived, it could not refuse to its own past the means of its survival. This sophism was taken for Fate in disguise.
