"War is like poison"-pan-politicized war film

On March 8, 2010 (Beijing time), Catherine Bigelow won the Oscar for Best Director. Prior to this, her most famous title was James Cameron's ex-wife.

Catherine Bigelow has always been good at splashing blood and stimulating cruelty. The 2002 film "K-19: Widowmaker" is the representative, although it is a representative of failure-at least from the perspective of investors, the film invested 100 million and earned 65 million at the global box office. Bigelow likes directors like Sam Parkinfa. His most famous film is "Sunset and Yellow Sand", a fight between men, and the lens has a preference for blood plasma.

If Catherine Bigelow had not followed Cameron’s advice and had taken over "The Hurt Locker," then she would have lost an opportunity to take the Golden Man. Of course, without "The Hurt Locker", Mr. Cameron's "Avatar" would have one less competitor. But how boring this Oscar will be. Eco-friendly, anti-war and ecological films like "Avatar" are too politically correct, and it's hard to play with at a glance.

Cameron’s evaluation of his ex-wife’s award-winning film is: "This is the "Field Platoon" in the Iraq War"-it was Oliver Stone's 1986 anti-Vietnam War movie. He wanted to show the historical status of "The Hurt Locker", but it is easy to misunderstand that this is just a new attempt at an independent and low-cost anti-war film-it doesn't sound much new.

If it must be compared with previous war films, it is also technical. The film uses more than 4 16mm handheld cameras. It is worth mentioning that the film ratio of the film is 100:1, which means that 100 minutes of material were taken, of which only 1 minute is useful. This ratio is crazy. The degree has exceeded the famous overspending film "Apocalypse Now" by Francisco Pola.

After its appearance at the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto Film Festival, "The Hurt Locker" was regarded by many film critics as a pan-politicized war movie-this may be the brilliance of "The Hurt Locker". It is not so much that Bigelow is showing a certain attitude, it is better to say that it has successfully brought us into the situation of the Iraq war. In such an unfamiliar and hostile country, all the Iraqi men moving on the roofs, windows, and streets seem to be terrorists. The shoving and verbal abuse of a woman can cause a nervous breakdown. All Iraq is strangers, including the Iraqi boy named "Beckham" who was closest to the actor James. We don't even know whether he really died in the end.

War is not like playing CS. It is a painful process to lie down on the sand for an afternoon and aim at an enemy as big as an ant in the distance. For example, if you stare for three hours, your eyes will burn, you will be very thirsty, and the damn target will always be missed, and you must kill him, otherwise, you will be killed by him. In the end, it will drive you into madness: damn it! Why not come with a missile and blow us up into the sky together. Perhaps it will be the collapse of "Apocalypse Now" if it continues.
However, "The Hurt Locker" stopped in time. We have seen enough about war reflections. Even the characterization of it: absurd politician game, graveyard for the unnamed to die in vain. The genius on the battlefield is also a certain lunatic. Daily life is unattractive, as the movie "Barton" said. American war films seem to reflect on the fact that the Vietnam War has been almost consumed. The soldiers in "The Hurt Locker" count the days to finish the work. Perhaps it will collapse sooner or later, but the drama of the collapse itself has also lost interest. We have already seen "Field Hospital" or "Full Metal Shell", and masters such as Kubrick or Robert Altman have already performed it.

The famous movie star Cappierce died at the beginning of the film, and "The Hurt Locker" was destined to be not that kind of heroic movie. However, James was mixed with a personal hero complex. When he reported to his superiors to dispose of 873 bombs, no one could doubt that this was a standard individual heroic patriotic youth. However, the numbers that are deeply recorded in his mind seem to be caused by another kind of madness, like the "war is like poison" in the opening movie, and he has fallen into nowhere to extricate himself.

"When you grow up, there may only be one or two things you love. For me, there is only one." Unlike the neat editing when the bomb was dismantled, the footage of James after returning home was slow and heavy. In fact, in Iraq, when James called his home, he often ended up speechlessly, which had already indicated that he would never be able to communicate with the peaceful world.

In the end, James returned to Iraq, and his duty time counted down from 365. The boundary between personal heroism and anti-war is here. Some people say that the war scenes shown by those neat editing scenes are full of appeal, and the protagonist finally returns to the battlefield. This is simply a conscription advertisement for the US military. But watching him walk towards the battlefield easily, another reaction of the audience may be: this guy is crazy. Go back to the mortal bomb disposal site. He is not much different from the Russian roulette player Robert De Niro in "Deer Hunter".

Falling asleep twice amidst the bursts of explosions, the works shortlisted for Oscars hated slum millionaires last year, and disliked the bomb disposal units this year. They won the best film respectively.

It's not that I discriminate against female directors, at least this film is really a bit watery, and I feel that I didn't grasp the point at all. I understand that the director wanted to play realism, but the pace was too slow, lack of climax and change, the tension and cruelty of the war were basically not filmed, and there was no power to portray a few characters. Inexplicable persistence, inexplicable sacrifice. During the period of watching, I almost fell asleep several times. I don't understand why I was nominated for the Golden Globe Awards.

The Hurt Locker quotes

  • Sergeant JT Sanborn: I'm not ready to die, James.

Staff Sergeant William James: Well, you're not gonna die out here, bro.

Sergeant JT Sanborn: Another two inches, shrapnel zings by, slices my throat, I bleed out like a pig in the sand. Nobody'll give a shit. I mean my parents - they care - but they don't count, man. Who else? I don't even have a son.

Staff Sergeant William James: Well, you're gonna have plenty of time for that, amigo.

    Sergeant JT Sanborn: Naw, man.

Staff Sergeant William James: You know?

Sergeant JT Sanborn: I'm done. I want a son. I want a little boy, Will. I mean, how do you do it, you know? Take the risk?

Staff Sergeant William James: I-I don't know. I mean, I just, uh... I guess I don't think about it.

Sergeant JT Sanborn: Every time we go out, it's life or death. You roll the dice. You recognize that, don't you?

Staff Sergeant William James: Yeah-yeah... Yeah, I do, but I don't know why, you know? Yeah...

Staff Sergeant William James: [sighs] I don't know, JT. You know why, you know... I'm the way I am?

Sergeant JT Sanborn: No, I don't.

  • Colonel John Cambridge: [waving] So long. Thank you.
