The scene where SAM puts down the communicator and the camera shakes from the lunar rover to the distant earth is simply the loneliest and most beautiful scene in a science fiction film. I have been alone on the moon for 3 years, enduring the torture of loneliness, just because I have the hope of going home and reuniting with my wife and daughter, when I find that on the blue planet that you think is home, no one is related to you, all Patience and support collapsed instantly. That kind of despair, thorough the heart and lungs. Choosing to return to the wrecked lunar rover and wait for death seems to be the only alternative destination.
