European farms are generally like this. Natural, with little trace of industrialization. But that doesn't mean residents' lives are dull and isolated. Everywhere you can see the intentions of life and the self-opinion of art, straightforward desires and long afternoon tea time, living without labels in this way, people are envious, but they are unaware and self-satisfied. For joy, leave the troubles to the starry sky and the big tree to resolve.
Aside from the beauty of a small place, it is the day-to-day life of a farm, where everyone must live in all kinds of gossip. Without watching TV, without the Internet, each other's private life is the most interesting topic. The heroine was angry at first because of the tenant's comments about her, but in the end she didn't care. She brought home an English boy she met at a party, made out in front of others, but closed the door and slept separately. She just wanted to quickly put an end to the endless talk and jokes about her virginity. I actually admire her candor.
My German friend F also once told me that when he gave up his job and left his hometown, he insisted on going to Berlin alone to study abroad. Perpetually narrow talk and gossip from people who want to leave the small place. Want to go wider and get a wider view. For me, it's the same, even though I haven't learned how to be alone, I'm still determined to leave the environment I'm familiar with and start over again and again.
What is always lacking in big cities is intimacy and security, and what is always lacking in small places is privacy and space. And the best solution is to be free to wander between the two, with a delicate and effortful pursuit of beauty and self, and to abandon contrived, ignorant and falsehood.
