Gandhi is a master who knows how to publicize and make good use of marketing. A large part of his success is the success of using the media to guide international public opinion.
Remember his famous saying: Poverty is the worst kind of violence, and the closer you get to God, the more you give up money. Also remember his nonviolence, uncooperativeness; there's no cooler gesture than this, and he created the least bloody Revolutionary War in history.
