Three Men Who Can't Help Himself (a film review I wrote in 2006)

At first, I heard about Jun Ki's name and his "The King's Man", but I didn't have the urge to watch it, because I wasn't very fond of Korean dramas, I thought it was just a vase character, and it was just a publicity for grandstanding. Recently, someone lent me a disc by chance, which is also considered to be shoved in front of my eyes. Both "My Girl" and "The King" are available. I open "The King's Man" at will, but I can't come up with Chinese subtitles. After just watching the first few minutes, I put it aside and changed to "My Girl". Looking at it, I was attracted by the show, and whenever Jun Ki appeared, I couldn't help but think of the graceful unveiling of the mask in the opening scene of "The King". So I found that I had to watch it, flipped out the disc, fiddled with English subtitles, listened to the Korean dialogue, read English, and understood most of it. I couldn't bear it anymore, so I finally went to the audio-visual store to buy a new disc. The owner promised to release Chinese subtitles.

Things got out of hand after that. Although I haven't had the heart to watch it for the fourth time, but every time I watch it, there is a huge sadness in my heart, and it is impossible not to think about it. In the film, I clearly saw three men who could not save themselves.

Longevity - the ambition of the actor is
longevity, born in a pariah, a street performer, living a life without a meal. However, Changsheng is proud and confident. From the rough clothes and masks, his eyes are full of determination and brilliance. He firmly believes that he is a great actor, and he has the ambition to get rid of the status quo and prove his strength. When the king gave Kong Ji an official position, he said: "We are poets, what is the use of an official position, only when we are full of knowledge" shows how proud he is. He protects Kong Ji again and again and sees how strong he is. Although he has nothing himself, he dares to Protecting a person at all costs. He is a strong will in spirit and a king in spirit. The ambition of the actor has become the source of his fate. When the king let them stay in the palace, the conceited longevity was blinded by ambition and lost Protecting Kong Ji's sensitivity, thinking that his talent has conquered the king of a country, he began to be complacent. Little did he know that the king was moved by the beautiful and agile Kong Ji. When he realized something, it was too late. Changsheng's conceit and ambition will I have led to a tragic ending and cannot save myself.

Yanshan Jun - Wang's inferiority complex
Lord Yeonsan, your noble king, holds the supreme power of life and death, and sits on the kingdom of the Joseon Dynasty. However, he is lonely and autistic. He pitys his mother's murdered life experience, hates his inability to control the court, and hates the court and the opposition to compare his mistakes with the wiseness of the previous emperor. Although he is noble as a king, behind the mask pretending to be majestic, there is a fragile, inferior and self-pity soul. As a result, he lost his physical and mental balance, and he relied on bloodthirsty and extravagance to strengthen his confidence and attention. His momentary anger and playing with Wang Wei can only deal with a corrupt official and a concubine in the harem, and the whole country and the people have deserted him. Even if he is willing to bear the crime of ten generations, he will not be able to kill and beheaded. There is only one green water, and he is regarded as a god, but he is ridiculed by the world as a prostitute who brings disaster to the country. Nominally he is king, but he is weak in will and humble in spirit. The ruler of a country, strong from the outside and hard at work, has become the source of his destiny. He's even more tyrannical and tough with the people and things he can control, including Kong Ji, the empathetic actor who is both fearful and compassionate to him, and he won't let him go. Going his own way led to the hopeless decline of his dynasty.

Kongji - the purest, the best, the most beautiful

Kongji, my purest, the best, the most beautiful Kongji. He is like a flower that blooms alone, beautiful but needs someone to know. The source of his destiny is dependence, and relying on the strong will of others will make him feel at ease, and then fully bloom with beauty. He doesn't need to make his own decisions, his nature and appearance have determined that there will be people who will help him make decisions and even control him. In the career of performing arts with Changsheng, he has a bold, enchanting and innocent smile, which can be freely retracted because of Changsheng's advancement and retreat. However, he has always been a tacit collaborator around Changsheng and an indispensable and beautiful supporting role. When he came to the palace, everything changed, and a more powerful ruler was moved by Kong Ji's beauty, and moved by Kong Ji's understanding. In front of the king, Kong Ji became the protagonist, so his most splendid side showed without reservation. He was happy to perform for the king and share his worries for the king. What's more, that king was simply an authority he couldn't disobey. Yes, Kong Ji is like this, a great reward can be exchanged for a great reward. Therefore, between the two powerful controllers, he is completely powerless to save himself.

The above three men who were unable to save themselves got together and staged a doomed tragedy. Kong Ji is not just a person and a body, he is more a symbol of all the beautiful nature that the two men have lost. Longevity is due to the humble life and the experience of Cangsang, Wang is due to long-term repression and cannot help himself. Therefore, they are all sincere to Kong Ji, not the low-level taste of dignitaries. They cherished Kong Ji as if they had seized their missing other half. Just like all of us onlookers, we can't put down or throw away this flower that is out of the soil but is spotless. The pain is that both of them are too strong and too confrontational, one is better than spirit, the other is better than power. Kong Ji has completely different feelings for the two. Changsheng is the most trusted person in his life. Without him, Kong Ji's eyes may only be fragile and hesitant; while Wang is mysteriously attracted to Kong Ji, but also irreversible. He satisfied Kong Ji's little vanity that he was appreciated, leaving Kong Ji no choice and no right to choose.
It was two men who wanted to protect him, but unexpectedly, under their seemingly strong will or authority, they both had a weak side. Changsheng is no longer afraid of power and does not care about life and death. After all, he is a mustard pariah. His life is like an ant, trampled by the powerful, let alone Kong Ji? The king has supreme power, but he cannot defend Kong Ji in the slander and frame-up of courtiers and women, and he must punish himself. In this way, the two men watched Kong Ji's innocent heart torn to shreds, and the three of them were helpless. Out of control, the pain of life is worse than death tormenting them, and the best relief may really be death. So, in the uprising that shook the earth and the mountains, the actor happily performed the last drama of his life on the rope, making an appointment to have nothing in the next life, and being an actor again, happily saying goodbye to the painful life; Wang returned to Lushui's In his arms, excluding the terrifying possessiveness that can destroy others, in the position he should be in, he happily enters the play, listening to Changsheng "Life is a stage, we just exist in various forms, and eventually we will all come together", smiling Say goodbye to the rivers and mountains that you can't control, and you will be free forever.

At the end of the film, it is pointed out that the so-called "The King's Man" does not only refer to the king in name, but also Changsheng is not the king in spirit. And Kong Ji, who is entangled in the "king", is so beautiful that one can't breathe, and so weak that it seems to wither at any time, but finally makes a decisive choice. At this time, it was too late for us to get out, Kong Ji penetrated deep into our hearts and became a pain that hurts at the touch of a button.

I like Lee Jun Ki's face, nothing else

  • Dominic 2022-03-02 08:01:28

What amazes me most about this movie is that Lee Jun-ki can be more beautiful and charming than women. Of course, what impresses me even more is the director's incisive and vivid portrayal of the faint-hearted prince and the common people! It deeply attracts the hearts of moviegoers, and has been following the protagonist's footsteps to see his fate. Praise

The King and the Clown quotes

  • [From subtitles]

Gong-gil: [atop a tightrope] To be up here, away from the bustle, my legs like wings would spread.

Jang-sang: [from below] Ahoy! What is that flower in full bloom I see yonder?

Street musician: Dost thou not recognize the one and only?

Jang-sang: So it is! The one and only! With rose petal'd lips. O Friend, beat thee thy leather while I go pick the flower.

Gong-gil: [watching Jang-sang ascend the tightrope] My, my, there comes a fool, rash and proud! Never knew a fool who knew his place!

Jang-sang: Ho! A tongue most untamed! Master of this house am I, come to bait thee!

Gong-gil: A gallows-hung scoundrel is what I see with an ill-fitting coat to hide his sores!

Jang-sang: Oh thorny Rose, is thy iris closed for me? Open them, and see as I walk the Master's gait. Oh, really!

[Jang-sang precariously walks across the tightrope]

Jang-sang: [finally reaching the other side] Good heavens! Me thought it would be a mere hop and a skip but t'was longer than a runny trip to the outhouse!

Gong-gil: [having climbed down] Master gait, master bait, either way strains the balls!

Jang-sang: And now, a fornicating wench, running off upon being surprised. 'Tis thy own form, saucy wench.

[Jang-sang quickly walks back across the tightrope again]

Gong-gil: I was expecting to see thee fall and crack thy frame. But not bad!

Jang-sang: Indeed, gifted are my two legs, but it is my third that has true genius - and thou shall see it this night!

[Jang-sang performs acrobatics on the tightrope]

Blackhat: Master wants to see you.

Gong-gil: Thy twin eggs, are they cracked yet or just in the crack?

Jang-sang: [as the crowd laughs] Safely in the crack, plugging my bunghole! But now, I must drain my bladder. I gotta pee before I continue!

Gong-gil: Why, you dirty boor! So then, let's try it on for size!

Jang-sang: Good idea! I shall oblige!

  • Jang-sang: Kingly is he who struts for a while, then exits in style.
