Racial discrimination in the To Kill a Mockingbird

The movie To Kill a Mockingbird discusses contradiction in life, reflecting racial discrimination, sexual discrimination and stereotyping in America at that time. What impressed me most was the racial discrimination the movie expressed.
The injustice of racism becomes apparent when the black man called Tom Robinson is convicted of raping a white woman named Mayella Ewell. Despite that there were enough evidence to prove that it was impossible for Tom to rape her, the jury and town is reluctant to take the world of a black man over two white accusers.
We all laughed when we saw the scene that how painful and innocent for Tom Robinson to describe what happened between himself and the white woman. It seems that it was him who was raped. Though Scout's father has proved that Tom Robinson's left hand was totally disabled , which was contradict to what the white woman said, the court still sent Tom Robinson to the prison. What's worse, they even shocked him to death declaring that Tom was meant to escape from the prison without stopping. What a ridiculous lie! Even Scout who was 6 years old didn't believe it. All what happened was just because Tom Robinson was a black man. A worst white man is always better than a best black man in America at that time. What miserable it was!
Fortunately, the racism really changed a lot in 1960 in America. The 1960's played a big part in the history of racism in America. The American people owe a great deal of thanks to both Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, for their position as role -modes to many black Americans. In 1965, the Voting Rights act was passed, helping not just blacks, but all Americans gain equal rights. The racism today was much better in America. As is known, present president Obama is a black man.
Only by abolishing racism can we keep our world peaceful forever and make it more and more harmonious.

I always feel that this story lacks such a breath, whether it is a book or a movie. In the two-line story, on the one hand, the father defended the black people and finally the public opinion defeated the truth. On the other hand, the strange uncle became more and more weird, but in the end it proved that he was a good old man. Good and evil are not so absolute. On the one hand, they doubt the rationality of justice; on the other hand, they praise good deeds. It is beautiful to see the world from a child’s perspective.

At first glance, I thought it was a platter of anti-racism and horror suspense. Only when you understand what it meant to the United States in 1932, and understand the general environment from the country’s economic collapse to the national mental collapse, can you understand what the original novels and movies are trying to express. Adhering to justice, kindness, courage and love in difficult times is precious.

To Kill a Mockingbird quotes

  • Scout: Atticus, do you defend niggers?

Atticus Finch: [startled] Don't say 'nigger,' Scout.

Scout: I didn't say it... Cecil Jacobs did; that's why I had to fight him.

Atticus Finch: [sternly] Scout, I don't want you fightin'!

Scout: I had to, Atticus, he...

Atticus Finch: I don't care what the reasons are: I forbid you to fight.

  • Atticus Finch: There are some things that you're not old enough to understand just yet. There's been some high talk around town to the effect that I shouldn't do much about defending this man.

Scout: If you shouldn't be defending him, then why are you doing it?

Atticus Finch: For a number of reasons. The main one is that if I didn't, I couldn't hold my head up in town. I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do somethin' again.

[he puts his arm around her]

Atticus Finch: You're gonna hear some ugly talk about this in school. But I want you to promise me one thing: That you won't get into fights over it, no matter what they say to you.
