Good or bad, handsome or ugly, rich or poor, they are all equal now.

Under arrest? Captain Potzdorf, sir! I'm a British officer.

It was in the reign of George III that the aforesaid personages lived and quarreled - good or bad, handsome or ugly, rich or poor - they are all equal now.

For money, well timed and properly applied, can accomplish anything.

It is well to dream of glorious war in a snug armchair at home. But it is a very different thing to see it first hand.

He was one of those born clever enough at gaining a fortune, but incapable of keeping one. For the qualities and energies which lead a man to achieve the first, are often the very cause of his ruin in the latter case.

Marking 1000 is of course deliberately leaving only this Kubrick's "Barry Lyndon" that I haven't watched yet, which has been on the hard drive for several months, and I am not disappointed. Although it is not my favorite Kubrick work, it is only based on Photography and composition are enough to give 5 stars. So far, including the short film, all Kushen's works have been read. Never again, never to appreciate Kubrick's work again.

94#. 1. As Kubrick said in the interview, the use of narration directs the audience's attention from "what will happen" to "how it will happen", the bitterness of the little people trying to break through the class and the fate of sympathy are all in three words . 2. The composition and light selection are extremely exquisite, as if the screen is covered with a subtle and hazy soft yarn, which makes the film have the dual beauty of ''moving image'' and ''still picture''. 3. ''There are classical famous music, why choose original'' This concept and sufficient preparations in the early stage make each plot fit into the notes that are perfectly combined with the times. In December 1789, Barry Lyndon lost all his pomp, dragged his broken leg and unbearable memories back to his hometown. Life was full of flavors, joy and glory, misery and depression, all returning to dust.

Barry Lyndon quotes

  • Narrator: [voice-over] It is well to dream of glorious war in a snug armchair at home, but it is a very different thing to see it first hand. And after the death of his friend, Barry's thoughts turned from those of military glory to those of finding a way to escape the service to which he was now tied for another six years. Gentlemen may talk of the age of chivalry, but remember the ploughmen, poachers and pickpockets whom they lead. It is with these sad instruments that your great warriors and kings have been doing their murderous work in the world.

  • Redmond Barry: Sir, I... I have a confession to make to you. I'm an Irishman. And my name is Redmond Barry. I was abducted into the Prussian army two years ago, and now have been put into your service by my Captain Potzdorf, and his uncle, the Minister of Police... to serve as a watch upon your... actions... and to give information to the same quarter.

Narrator: [voice-over] The Chevalier was as much affected as Barry at thus finding one of his countrymen. For he too was an exile from home, and a friendly voice, a look, brought the old country back to his memory again.
