Another film that has been famous for too long but I haven't seen it. I found it by accident in eMule, Robert De Niro + Jean Reno - for these two old guys, who can resist " What about Ronin? The 120-minute film can be summed up in almost one word - quiet. There is not a mentally retarded line in the whole film, and almost all communication is completed in the eye movements of De Niro and Reno. No high-tech, no fake cool like in American films today, no gimmicky action and massive gunfights. Even the scheduling of the big scenes is restrained and decent, and there is no suspicion of showing off. Old Mercedes, Audi, Renault, French towns, country roads, street cafes, everything is full of classic flavor. The performances of the old actors are impeccable, and the ronin turns into old-fashioned craftsmen in their hands. Only this time De Niro is more like Reno in "Killer Leon" - a god with a human breath, a knight with a knightly style. Frankly speaking, although I have always liked Renault, this French tough guy is still slightly inferior to De Niro.

Sometimes it's hard to understand how the American film industry, a country without culture, can create Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Robin Williams, Kevin Costner, Hanks ? And a film country that has created "The Teacher", "The Wire", "The Assassination of Kennedy", "Raging Bull", "Forrest Gump" and "Perfect World", why are almost all movies today so bad? Just like if you don't know Chen Kaige, you can never imagine that "Wuji" and "Farewell My Concubine" are from the same director. Maybe this is the result of the industrialization of literature and art. After the classics, a piece of innovation brought by the big machine age is left behind. In the past few years, I have never seen such a profound American film. Maybe the company that once created countless classics should really change its name. 20th Century Fox may be called 20th Century Focus. Maybe American movies can only be the focus of the last century.

At first, it seems that the screenwriter David Mamei paid attention to this film, but such a strong cast was just ruined by the story.

The chasing racing scene is good~the climax is not good~

Ronin quotes

  • [Sam looks at Jean-Pierre's model]

Jean-Pierre: The Forty-Seven Ronin. Do you know it?

    [Sam shakes his head]

Jean-Pierre: Forty-seven samurai, whose master was betrayed and killed by another lord. They became ronin, masterless samurai, disgraced by another man's treachery. For three years they plotted, pretending to be thieves, mercenaries, even madmen. That, I didn't have time to do. And then one night they struck, slipping into the castle of their lord's betrayer, killing him.

Sam: Nice. I like that. My kind of job.

Jean-Pierre: There's something more. All forty-seven of them committed seppuku. Ritual suicide, in the courtyard of the castle.

Sam: Well, that I don't like so much.

    Jean-Pierre: But you understand it?

Sam: What do you mean, I understand it?

Jean-Pierre: The warrior code. The delight in the battle, you understand that, yes? But also something more. You understand there is something outside yourself that has to be served. And when that need is gone, when belief has died, what are you? A man without a master.

Sam: Right now I'm a man without a paycheck.

Jean-Pierre: The ronin could have hired themselves to new masters. They could have fought for themselves. But they chose honor. They chose myth.

    Sam: They chose wrong.

  • Gregor: [aiming his gun at a children's playground] See that little girl down there?

[the Dapper gent grabs Gregor's arm, Gregor fires a shot which just misses her and hits the top of the playground apparatus she's on. Gregor's gun is silenced so nobody notices the shot]

Dapper Gent: Have you lost your mind? Why did you do that?

Gregor: To make a point. I don't know her, but I was ready to splatter her brains all over the playground. But you... I don't particularly like you. Just imagine what I'll do to you if you try anything. Now give me my money.
