There are not so many miracles in life

I used to be an intern.
I don't have a mandatory 80-hour week, I don't have so many strange cases, I don't have the opportunity to open a patient's chest on my own, I don't do an autopsy to find out the cause of death, we have a lot of it, etc. But I have often encountered death, I have tried everything possible to fight for a chance to come to power, and I have encountered many touching, helpless, and sad stories.
I remember a long operation with a middle-aged man suffering from tuberculosis. He needed to remove his entire left lung because they were completely non-functioning. The day before, my resident teacher emphasized that the operation time is long, and only those who can persevere can go on. Of course, I hoped to be able to see it, but after noon, I was a little dizzy, and finally I was forced to step down until two o'clock. I am very fortunate that this patient had a successful operation and recovered well. Although he is getting emaciated and thin, with his strong physique and good physical function, everything is getting better after all. It's just that he is more and more dependent on his wife, and every time he wears his chest, he needs to hold his wife's hand. A 40-year-old man in his prime was hit by the disease and almost lost his confidence. Fortunately, the operation was a success, and everything went as expected. He was out of the hospital in about a month and I saw his kids and wife were happy. Although he is no longer able to do his previous job, the family is complete. I saw him a few times after that. He was a little thinner than when he was hospitalized, but he was in good spirits and his return to the clinic was not bad. The last time I heard his name was when it was my turn to internal medicine, and as soon as I arrived in internal medicine I participated in a case discussion. Unfortunately, I heard his name, and this time it was indeed a case of death discussion. I can't describe how I felt at the time, I understood he was just a patient and I was just an intern. We don't have any emotional connection, we don't know each other well. But I can't connect a person who was still alive a dozen days ago with a name on a dead list. The reason for his admission this time was "difficulty breathing" and symptoms of "chest tightness and chest pain". At noon on the first day of admission, he was still eating a watermelon bought by his wife, and there was no warning. Suddenly he felt distressed, the pain was unrelievable, he soon lost consciousness, and his heart stopped. He didn't make it through, he became a cold corpse. Cause of death to be studied. We discussed for a long time that day, and finally came to the exact cause of his death. A few days later, I informed my resident doctor in surgery of this matter. He also did not expect it. Death is not predictable, and there is too little we can do. Physicians are not gods. Physicians can cure diseases and save lives, but their power is still limited. This is what interns must bear in mind. There are not so many miracles in life, and many times they are.
Grey struggled to rescue a female patient who had been pierced by an iron pole, and she had been declared weak. It's not that Gray didn't understand, she just screamed while trying to rescue: We can't do nothing, it's our responsibility. The "Nazi" Bailey next to her pulled her away and told her that she had been rescued for ten minutes, and that the patient's aorta had been torn and there was nothing he could do. Because physicians often face death and are the last people the patient sees, it always feels like a ruthless executioner. Diseases are not caused by doctors. Doctors hate disease more than patients and hope to restore everyone to health. However, many times all they can do is inform the family and announce the time of death. The pain was engraved on everyone present, including the doctors who treated them. Who knows, who cares? In the end, Derek said to the patient's fiancé, Danny, that she wanted me to tell you that if our love was strong enough, I would always be by your side. My tears fell uncontrollably. Fortunately, I can still tell important people some important words at the last moment of my life. Love is never the only content of life, it is the most important thing.
There is also a sad story of a very young woman. When she was sent to the hospital, she was not breathing, and her husband waited outside the emergency room of the hospital with a blank face. Not sure what terrible thing happened to them, but it must have been unpleasant. Soon the woman's arrhythmia, the heart rate increased, became supraventricular tachycardia, to the ventricular fibrillation is a matter of a few seconds. Immediately defibrillated, the heart rhythm was restored. Nothing was washed out during gastric lavage. It is said that the husband sent the pesticide to the hospital immediately when he saw his wife drank it. But it is still irreversible. Many times, not every decision has room for redemption. Once the bitter fruit is brewed, it can only be swallowed. The next day, I didn't see the woman, and when I asked the teacher, I found out that she had left. Life is so fragile, and everyone understands that only when we face it can we have a deep understanding.
There is no doubt that this drama is artistically processed, such as the elevator thoracotomy, such as the operation of the newborn, such as many specific plots. But some of these stories may be well-founded, which is why the stories are moving. The couple, who had been together for 60 years, were going to travel to Venice in the second month. They had to cross the bridge of Sighs in a boat with a pointed bow, so that they could stay in love with each other in the next life. When they learned of the terminally ill news, the old couple asked not to tell each other. In order to make each other live a happy life, they finally walked out of the hospital holding hands slowly, as always for the past 60 years. And I also saw that when we regretfully declared the patient's powerlessness, the wife's family cried bitterly and almost lost their way.
Of course, there are still many happy times in the hospital, such as pregnant women with congenital deformities, unable to lie on their backs, and deformed spines. We have adopted various methods to successfully deliver healthy big and fat boys to puerperae, and some patients with severe traumatic brain injury can finally get out of bed and live independently after intensive treatment.
There are not so many miracles in life. Fortunately, we have never lost confidence. Fortunately, we have not given up hope. We are still working hard.
Therefore, people are reborn after repeated blows, and they all succeed after repeated efforts.
Don't crave for miracles, just don't give up.

Grey's Anatomy quotes

  • Dr. Meredith Grey: No-one likes to lose control, but as a surgeon there's nothing worse. It's a sign of weakness, of not being up to the task. And still there are times when it just gets away from you. When the world stops spinning and you realize that your shiny little scalpel isn't gonna save you. No matter how hard you fight it, you fall. And it's scary as hell. Except there's an upside to freefalling. It's the chance you give your friends to catch you.

  • Dr. Meredith Grey: The key to surviving a surgical internship is denial. We deny that we're tired, we deny that we're scared, we deny how badly we want to succeed. And most importantly, we deny that we're in denial. We only see what we want to see and believe what we want to believe, and it works. We lie to ourselves so much that after a while the lies start to seem like the truth. We deny so much that we can't recognize the truth right in front of our faces.
