The two main themes of the film are: to reflect on the judicial system and prison management (improper sentencing, torture of prisoners); to realize the value of life and win victory.
Victory is multiple, James won the first battle, Henry overcomes his inner demon, James tried hard to let Henry find the meaning of life and finally recognize this friendship, is it not a victory.
In 1941, Joe DiMaggio hit a 56-game streak; Henri walked into the dungeon with his head held high, with the rattling of prisoners on both sides, and no one could take away the fruits of his victory, so he carved "victory "The word, die in peace. Henri's death was unexpected and reasonable. Returning to the dungeon, once again in the dark, he may still be afraid, but now that he has friends, his sister is living a happy life, and people in similar circumstances may not have to suffer the torture he has endured. Henri may never be able to overcome his fear of claustrophobic space and darkness, but he is no longer afraid of the brutal warden, Alcatraz, or death. To survive is victory, and to die with dignity is victory.
Back to reality, in 1963, Alcatraz closed. In 2019, the torture map of Guantanamo Prison shocked the world. If history keeps repeating itself, the ideal society that countless pioneers have longed for will only become a fantasy.
