Boarding Gate

Director: Olivier Assayas

Produced by: France (2007)

It is a transnational crime thriller filmed by Maggie Cheung's ex-husband. In addition to playing the role, there is also the starring of Hong Kong beauty Lin Xilei, but she failed to change her pale vase situation. If you use the worst maliciousness to evaluate the film, the only thing that is not bad and can be called a bright spot is the ten or twenty minutes at the end, and other places can only be described as useless. Actress Asia Argento is the daughter of Italian horror master Argento. Last year, several of her films were particularly hated. One was "Old Mistress" and the other was "Boarding Gate".

The film follows a troubled Italian woman who is drawn into a conspiracy, but the story comes to an abrupt end. Hong Kong appears as a city carrier carrying betrayal and revenge, allowing the main characters to escape the first half of the story and have the illusion of starting over again (KTV sings Ai Jing's "The Desire to Fly", flying to a distant place).

Assayas, who wears a film manual and the halo of author and director, has always been fond of shooting various types of films including crime. Stories are often directionless, chaotic and irregular. The clips are fast and sharp and full of terrifyingly compulsive thrills. "Boarding Gate" can only be regarded as a chaotic version of "The Devil's Lover" five years later. Although the latter was popular with a small group of people, it also received a lot of bad reviews at Cannes in 2002. However, most viewers are not willing to be the guinea pigs of the experiment, to face the swaying language of the camera and endure the clueless dialogue. They just want to watch a wonderful suspenseful story, and unfortunately, "Boarding Gate" doesn't even do the most basic thing. It can be seen that Assayas is not willing to be mediocre, but this is a third-rate work.

ps. The story is not without merit, but it is of course more harsh to Assayas, so it can only be as the title says. If you want to eliminate discomfort, try to pick a good version of the subtitles to watch. The early version and the compressed version are basically incomprehensible, and you can understand the problem by listening to the Cantonese subtitles.
