"The Great Dictator" - a man's cry in the darkest hour

The weekly movie viewing activities are one of the few moments that I am looking forward to and relaxed. I was no longer ready to go on Wednesday. There are a lot of things to do. But thinking that things will always be done, still want to see or want to see, so I went.

The film tells the ironic story of a dictator who used hatred to kill and was finally sent to a concentration camp by mistake. What he wants to express is very obvious, and there are many unique and exaggerated funny parts in the middle, but I have to say that this The subject matter is too heavy for me.

In the film, Hickler constantly emphasizes maintaining the purity of the Aryans, fantasizing that Tomenia will be turned into a blond "beautiful world", and the globe will become a blond world. But in essence he is not for the interests of the Aryans, but only for himself. When Gobesh said he could be a god, he fluttered and dreamed of world domination, (I love this show, Chaplin was really funny) He just wanted to have supreme power and be supreme dictator.

The usual domination strategy of totalitarians is to create an enemy that diverts people's attention and dissatisfaction from reality to a common object of hatred. Hynkel knows this too. The Jews were his chosen enemies. He aroused the resentment of the people against the Jews, and turned the contradictions within the country into contradictions between nations. Jews live in special Jewish quarters, and the borders exist from the very beginning, which is similar to that in "Stork Hesitating", where refugees fled to Greece from other places, but were forced to live in fixed circles, forming forgotten or even abandoned regional co-workers Different song.

Although the film mainly focuses on persecuted Jews, we can also tell from the few words that under Heckler, life for ordinary people was not easy. When the workers went on strike, he would shoot more than 3,000 people, just because he "didn't want to hear any dissatisfaction from them", showing the dictator's autocracy vividly.

Let me talk about my superficial understanding of the characters in the film.

Hannah is a more "good" image. She often exposes and expresses a lot. I like these beautiful and weak monologues. At first, she said, "I don't want to go, I love this place despite the ordeal and persecution." After the barber shop was bombed, she said to Charlie, let's go to osterlich, which is still a free country, listen to Jacques The gentleman said that the environment was beautiful, and the green fields were full of apples and grapes. "There, much better than here. She always believed in a place full of love and kindness.

But osterlich may not really be that good, nor will it always be a free country. It's just the moon in the water, a false utopia. It can't resist strong ships and cannons, and when this land is trampled, the people who flee can only die once again.

Regarding Garbitsch, I see him as the infinitely magnified evil side of Hynkel, the real Satan. He followed hynkel like a ghost, whispering in Hynkel's ear: "Aut Caesar aut nulled." His presence itself revealed a secret intention, and I suspect that Chaplin set up such a role with some Magical meaning.

Hannah Arendt believes that the establishment of a totalitarian group depends on two factors, one is the demise of the mass class, and the other is the unconditional loyalty of the group members. The stormtroopers are the best representatives of unconditionally loyal group members. They are a collection of indistinguishable individuals. Any one of them is exactly the same as another. There is no personality at all. They are the executors of orders. , is the defender of power, is a cold state machine, and is not a human being. Absolute obedience is the hallmark of this team - being polite (not friendly, of course) to the Jews after Schultz ordered it, while Schultz rushed into the ghetto to sabotage after being accused of treason. They just obey orders, no matter what the order is, kill or commit suicide, just obey, just tools. When Schultz was wanted, they also showed no mercy to their former chief.

At the end, Charlie took the high stage to give a speech and uttered the cry of love and peace in his heart, but listening to this completely different tone from the previous Hynkel policy, the crowd below responded frantically. It's just the cult of the rulers by the masses, and seeing them embrace such a huge shift so quickly, without a shred of questioning, just makes me shudder.

The film adopts a more straightforward way, and it cannot be called brilliant, and it has been criticized for it. But in the era of rampant Nazis, Chaplin needed amazing courage to make this work, and I still like this work very much at present.

Some people say that the final speech is too thin and makes it a little ridiculous, but I still like the last shout-

I'm sorry but I don't want to be an Emperor - that's not my business - I don't want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone if possible, Jew, gentile, black man, white. We all want to help one another, human beings are like that.

We want to live by each other's happiness, not by each other's misery. We don't want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone and the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone.

The way of life can be free and beautiful.

But we have lost the way.

Greed has poisoned men's souls - has barricaded the world with hate; has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed.

We have developed speed but we have shut ourselves in: machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical, our cleverness hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little: More than machinery we need humanity; More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.

The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness

in men, cries out for universal brotherhood for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world, millions of despairing men, women and little children, victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people. To those who can hear me I say Do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress: the hate of men will pass and dictators die, and the power they took from the people, will return to the people and so long as men die, liberty will never perish...

Soldiers - don't give yourselves to brutes, men who despise you, enslave you - who regiment your lives, tell you what to

do, what to think and what to feel, who drill you, diet you, treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder!

Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men, machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts. You don't hate - only the unloved hate - the unloved and the unnatural. Soldiers - don't fight for slavery, fight for liberty!

In the seventeenth chapter of Saint Luke it is written the kingdom of God is within man - not one man, nor a group of men - but in all men - in you! You the people have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happiness! You the people have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure! Then in the name of democracy let us use that power - let us all unite!!! Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a

chance to work, that will give you the future and old age and security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to

power, but they lie! They do not fulfil their promise, they never will! Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people! Now let us fight to fulfil that promise! Let us fight to free the world, to do away with national barriers, to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance! Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men's happiness.

Soldiers - in the name of democracy, let us all unite!!!

[Speech by Charlie (Charles) Chaplin (1889-1977) from The Great Dictator movie (1940)]

===============================================

I want to help everyone, Jew, non-Jew, black, white. We want to help each other. Humans should be like that. We want a happy life, not a miserable one. Let us not hate each other.

In this world, the earth home is rich, it can nurture everyone. Life can be free and beautiful. But we got lost. Greed poisons people's souls and blocks the world with hatred, making us go bloody step by step. We are developing faster and faster, but we are closing ourselves again. The industrial age leaves us only with desire. Ours just makes us cynical, our smarts make us callous. We think too much and perceive too little. In addition to machines, we need humanity more; in addition to intelligence, we need kindness and meekness. Without these qualities, life would be violent and nothing would exist...

Airplanes and radios have brought us closer together, and these inventions call for human kindness, for the brotherhood of the world, to unite us. Now my voice is heard in all directions, heard by millions of desperate men, women and children, by those who have suffered under tyranny and by innocents who have been wrongfully imprisoned. Those who hear my words, do not despair! The misery that looms over us is nothing but fleeting greed, nothing but the suffering of those who fear human progress. The hatred of men will pass, the dictators will die, and the power they have taken from them will return to the hands of the people

middle. As long as people live, freedom will not be destroyed.

Soldiers, don't serve those beasts, those beasts who despise you and enslave you, they manipulate your life, tell you what to think, what to feel, they discipline you, treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don't give yourselves to these people, these machine-like people. You are not machines, you are not cows, you are people! There is human love in your hearts. Do not hate, hate only those who have no love and no nature. Soldiers, don't fight for slavery, fight for freedom! St. Luke said, "The kingdom of God is in men." Not in one man nor in a crowd, but in all men, in you! You have the power to make machines, you have the power to make happiness. You have the power to create a free and beautiful life, to make life a beautiful experience. In the name of democracy, let us use this power. Let us unite, let us fight for a new world that will give people a chance to work, wealth to the young, and security to the old. Promise these things, the things the beasts have promised. But they lie! They didn't fulfill that promise, they never will! Dictators free themselves but enslave others. Now, let's fight to fulfill that promise! Let's fight for a free world, fight for the removal of the barriers of the state, fight for greed, hatred and intolerance, let's fight for a just world.

He is not singing in the wilderness.

Written at the back: I haven't written a complete article for a long time. I always worry that my writing is not good enough. The fragments that flashed in my mind are glass slag, and I have tried my best to swallow them all.

Thank you for being here.
