Released in 1996, "Romeo and Juliet" is a love tragedy based on Shakespeare's story frame and completed according to the postmodern social form.
The beginning of the film does not directly follow Romeo and Juliet, but first shows the audience the conflict between the two families (the Kai family and the Ray family). And in the form of news commentary, it was explained that the conflict between the two big families was caused by years of grievances. In the first few minutes of the film, we mainly show us the disputes between the two families in the famous city of Verona. There is no explanation for the reasons for the disputes, but there is no doubt that this dispute was caused by years of grievances. (In the film, the phrase "new conflict caused by long-term resentment" is repeated three times in the first 8 minutes, and important things are said three times, emphasizing the depth of the contradiction between the two families.) Their contradictions are like carvings. Since they are normal in their DNA, the viewer does not know where their contradictions come from, but only knows that it has been a long time. The love story of Romeo and Juliet can be said to be well known, so the film does not sell anything at all. The beginning of the film explains the end of the story. The two met at a family banquet held by Juliet's house. They fell in love at first sight, and their love was disturbed due to the conflict between the two families. After a bunch of oolong incidents, Romeo was exiled, Juliet drank the fake death drug to not marry others, but Romeo didn't know Juliet faked death. After he just drank the poison, Juliet woke up and saw Romeo beside him, Juliet was sad Desperate, shoot suicide. In this version of "Romeo and Juliet", although the ending could not escape a tragic ending, the director arranged for the two to meet briefly on the deathbed, which can be regarded as comforting this tragic love.
This love story can be regarded as a Shakespeare classic, which made countless people applaud, but also puzzled many people. (I am one of the people who do not understand) Why do two people fall in love so fast, and how can they fall in love so deeply? Why is there only each other in their love, the love is so emotional? Why does it have to end in tragedy? Wouldn't such a combination be bloody? I don't understand. Slowly I discovered that it was my angle that was wrong. Shakespeare's play may be to present Romeo and Juliet's love in a dramatic form, expressing a purely emotional and passionate love. So why can't this kind of love have a happy ending? My understanding is: the two met at the best age and in their most beautiful appearances. They fell in love too fast, and such enthusiasm would not last long. After the passion recedes, they will eventually face the dullness of life. So when their love comes to an abrupt end, a tragic ending can show their detached, surreal love. Thinking about it this way, I no longer feel that Romeo and Juliet's love is a tragedy, but that their love is magnificent.
For Romeo and Juliet, love is everything in their lives. For the sake of love, they got rid of their names, sacrificed their friends, and gave their lives. Their love has moved thousands of people. Although their love tragedy touched many audiences, in real life we still need to look at love rationally. I envy Romeo and Juliet's love, but their love is not what I want, reality is not a drama. Love is not the whole of life. In addition to love, we also have family, friendship, ideals, poetry and distance.
