Gold or Reputation, that is a question.

Ben valued the reputation of the Gates family more.
He cherished or always believed that his ancestors contributed to the end of the Civil War in this country, rather than what others thought was Lincoln's accomplice and co-conspirator

Mitch Wilkinson seemed to value it. gold is
actually still wanted to change the reputation of their own family,

he said.
a man only has one lifetime, but history can make you remember forever.
so can well explain the very beginning he wanted to find a person exclusive of honor the city of gold, At the last minute, however, he did give his life for the honor of discovering the treasure.

Of course, there is still a little bug in the
last paragraph of the movie. The final sluice should be a structure similar to a submarine. One is opened and then one is closed, so Wilkinson gave his life to let them go first, and a few of them got out of the sluice. At that time, they found a direct downward exit, so there would be no problem of closing the first secret room. It would be better to let the water flow directly instead of the water flow that they thought would block the secret rooms on both sides.
I don't know if my thinking is right.
