A doomed love tragedy

1. Alienation effect

The concept was created by Brecht. The traditional drama is to immerse the audience through the performance of the actors, so as to empathize and understand the subjective experience of the characters. Pursue drama and create illusions. The alienation effect is to let the audience break away from the drama, realize that everything is not reality, examine the drama objectively, pursue defamiliarization, and destroy the illusion.

The film's greatest distancing effect is achieved by abruptly switching to the violin playing and the waves. At the same time when the conflict is the most intense, suddenly switch to violin playing or ocean waves, let the audience realize that this is a movie, and break away from the movie. When the screen cuts back to the main scene, the violin playing sometimes continues, becoming background music, which plays a role in setting off the atmosphere and conveying the feelings of the characters.

The second is the gun scene of two robbery, the first is a bank robbery, and the second is a robbery of a rich man in a hotel. In the first scene, the accountant is still calculating, and the people who read the newspaper are still reading the newspaper. The character will exit the screen when shot, and the cleaning aunt leisurely cleans up the blood. The workers who repaired the lights in the second scene were still repairing the lights, and the waiters were not disturbed. They seem to be independent of the movie and know it's a movie. Through this method, Godard reminds the audience that this is a movie, and don't go too deep into the play.

2. The author's monologue

This is Godard's comeback after a long absence from the film industry after his days of political leaflet films. He began to not understand the world, he felt crazy, so when the heroine went to him, he was in a mental hospital and asked himself: Where am I?

He said to the heroine: Young people are sick, they can remember everything, but they forget everything, they all live in a black hole. Years have passed since the May 1968 storm. Young people remember that history, but forget the significance of that history. As if living in a black hole where everything is swallowed up.

In the restaurant, he said: The chairman said, always remember the numbers, everyone has forgotten the chairman, he is a good cook, he feeds the whole of China. Although many years have passed, contemporary young people have forgotten everything, but Godard still remembers Maoism and praised his great achievements.

Then he said: Today's young people are garbage, neither cigarettes nor jeans have been invented, and nothing has been achieved. They didn't invent unemployment because they didn't ask for it. Rather than criticizing modern youth for failing to achieve anything and daring to resist this society, it is more about criticizing the development of capitalism that has caused a wave of youth unemployment.

Joseph and Carmen, who were young people behind, answered this sentence: It is not us that is trash, but the world.

Godard goes on to say: What is the nature of the modern crisis? We created a damn economy and made garbage. The typical goal of capitalism is to produce the best possible product. In today's world, people are useless, but machines are omnipotent, and machines are starting to produce goods that no one needs. Godard explained to us the essence of the crisis of modern society: the excessive development of capitalism has caused overproduction, producing many things that human beings do not need. These things become garbage and pollute the environment. The development of mechanization has rendered people useless and increased unemployment.

Finally in the hotel, the violin band said to Godard: We never play pop music, the times are ruthless to fools like us. This is Godard, who loves classical music, regrets classical music, and criticizes the popularization of music in this impetuous era.

3. Love that is doomed to tragedy

From the perspective of the male protagonist: as a policeman, he caught the female protagonist when he robbed the bank for the first time, but fell in love with her because of her beauty.

The female lead asked the male lead to tie her up, and the male lead said: I only look suspicious when I tie you up.

Hostess: If I fall in love with you, are you willing to untie it?

Male lead: That would be me being restrained.

It has been implied that the male protagonist fell in love with the female protagonist because of her beauty, and it became a kind of bondage for him.

The policeman who arrested him said: The police are for the society, and the individual is for the dream. As a police officer, the male protagonist should care about society and bring the female protagonist to justice. But the male protagonist chose to pursue his dream as an individual, and the female protagonist was his dream.

When his girlfriend Claire asked him, he replied: "Strange feeling, like a spell, a force pushes me towards her like a tide that can't be resisted by the shore. This is the power of instinct, the power of passion. So Claire reassured him: the tide will go, and I can help you. But when Carmen's red rose came, he still returned to her without hesitation.

In the end, Carmen's control over him gradually deepened, so he felt that he was living in a prison, and he said to Carmen: I finally understand why the prison is called the abyss.

He wanted to resist, he wanted to join the robbery team, he wanted to get rid of Carmen's control. He said to Carmen: He is ashamed. As a woman, Carmen charged into battle, and he could only wait in the hotel. It is a shame for him as a man. Carmen said he was not ashamed, but afraid, afraid of being controlled by Carmen.

In the end Carmen was about to break up with him, and he finally broke out: If you leave me, I will kill you.

From Carmen's point of view: The opening is Carmen's monologue: 1. Although I am ignorant, I also know that the world is not controlled by innocents. The innocent here refers to those who are controlled, and the guilty are those who control others. The world is controlled by those who control others, in other words, men.

2. I move on if possible, not afraid, just because I never could and don't know how to get into it. I'm still on my way, bye. Carmen wants to change this, but she doesn't know how, because no one has ever done it, but she decides to move on.

3. I'm the girl who shouldn't be named Carmen. It shows that Carmen in this film should not be understood as a person's name, but should be the name of a girl who dares to resist.

She said to Joseph: What do I want in my life? Want people to see how women and men get along. Not what to say to a man, but what to do. It shows that Carmen wants to use his life to change the status quo that men control everything, not just with words, but with deeds, so that the world can see that women can get along with men like this.

So when she's in love with Joseph, she's in control. When Joseph felt pressure to fight back, she refused and even broke up with him. Because she is not the planner of the robbery, if Joseph joins the team of the robbery, she will no longer be under her control. That's why she said to Joseph: If I love you, your end will come. Because her love is strong, masculine, and will control everything about him.

The last two fell outside the bath, and Carmen said: You make me sick. Joseph said: You too. This sentence seems to remind me of what the male protagonist said to the female protagonist at the end of "Do As You Want". Carmen said this because men only have sexual desires for her, so after that she said: Why do men exist. Joseph said this because Carmen's grip on her made him sick.

Carmen's fate is already doomed. The beautiful girl who plays the violin and the male protagonist's girlfriend Carlisle said: "Fate to use your power. We are not our own masters. What has been decided will definitely happen." This sentence uttered by Carlisle, who is also a woman, implies that the fate of women is doomed, and no matter how much she resists, it will not change in the end.

In the end, Carmen, like the heroines in other Godard films, is killed by Joseph and becomes a victim of rebellion against this fate.

The guilty are on the side, the innocent are on the side. When men and women want to control each other, you are the guilty one, and you are now the opposite of the innocent.
