Ending blindly

It's a long film, nearly 3 hours. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

The beginning was terrible, terrible, and I almost lost the interest in continuing to watch. Later I learned that this was a pavement for the main story behind, a typical gangster revenge story. What revenge? Of course it is the enemy of killing his father. Everyone can guess.

It is about the chaos in New York during the American Civil War, where gangs were rampant and frequent merging together. In order to avenge his father, Velen, played by Leonardo, lurks beside the enemy boss and becomes his confidant... A familiar plot... "Prince's Revenge"?

The assassination failed, and the enemy boss humiliated him and demanded his revenge. Then he did it after 1 hour (movie time). The final duel was a bit interesting, it was fought in a rain of bullets.

There is another line in the film, that is, politicians rush to death, forcing people from famine-stricken Ireland to go directly to the front line. In the face of resistance from immigrants, the government will not hesitate to send troops to carry out bloody suppression. The film’s position is on the Irish side, that is, against the government and against Lincoln. This also shows that American movies are relatively free politically.

At the end of the film, it’s a bit inexplicable to go up to the new students in New York.

When watching action movies or revenge movies, it's still good.

Gangs of New York quotes

  • [speaking of Bill the Butcher]

Jenny: When I was twelve years old, my mother was dead, and I was livin' in a doorway. He took me in. Took care of me, in his way. After they cut out the baby... well, he doesn't fancy girls that's scarred up. But you might as well know in your own mind that he never laid a hand on me until I asked him to.

  • [as a man is about to be hung]

Bill: That's a fine locket. I'll give you a dollar for it.

    Arthur: It was me mother's...

    Bill: Dollar and a half?

    Arthur: Done.
