What I want to share with you today is the 2002 classic action movie "The Torn Doom".
There is a word called " gunfighting ", you may not have heard of it, but it is likely that you have seen it on various media platforms.
When you see someone in the movie, who is obviously holding a weapon for long-range attacks, but must start a close fight with the person, then what you are likely to see is gunfighting.
This form of action that combines modern weapons with traditional martial arts is unconventional, refreshing and exciting. It is indeed better than traditional fighting in terms of visual effects.
And the movie I'm going to talk about today is the originator of this action form-"The Torn Doom".
Of course, in addition to the classic "gun fighting technique", what I want to talk about is the core of thought that this movie wants to express with the help of action scenes.
In fact, the movie "Torn Doom" is a severely underrated movie, a movie dominated by action scenes, and a classic movie that deserves to be reviewed.
Gun Fighting
Someone said, isn’t this the big move of Marco Polo in the King? Don’t say it, it’s really a bit like it. It is estimated that if the Glory of the King is made into a movie, Mark should be almost like the one in "The Torn Doom".
In the movie, all the "priests" have to practice this "gun fighting technique" diligently.
As the name suggests, this fighting technique combines guns and martial arts. Spear fighting technique emphasizes "stable, accurate and ruthless". Steady means that the bottom plate must be stable enough to avoid the most bullets with the smallest range of motion; quasi means that the marksmanship must be accurate enough to shoot at close range or not to shoot, and the shot must be shot; ruthlessly, the hand must be shot. Ruthless, whether it is with firearms or with fists, all moves are life-threatening skills.
Gun fighting looks a bit similar to the fighting scenes in The Matrix, but it is closer to reality. Because "The Matrix" is a pure science fiction film, the fighting scenes can be extremely exaggerated because they are fighting in the electronic world. However, the fighting in this film can be said to show the advantages of "The Matrix" and to put forward a new concept of martial arts more scientifically, namely " probability statistics ".
When a priest is facing multiple enemies, they will count the position of the enemy, and then estimate the probability that a bullet will be fired from each direction, and then dodge, and at the same time, the probability of an enemy appearing in each position is calculated. Evaluate and then shoot.
So, when you see a priest avoiding several bullets, it is not because he reacted quickly, but because he calculated in advance. This is why Bell must first observe the opponent's standing position and gun position.
In the film, there is a special explanation of gun fighting technique. Actual combat data show that spear fighting technique can increase the combat effectiveness of priests by 120%.
It's no wonder that there are so few "priests", and they have to be trained from an early age, because they not only learn martial arts, but also learn mathematics, physics and chemistry. It can be said to be more difficult.
These are the basic settings of spear fighting. Let’s review the classic spear fighting scenes in the movie.
First round
Bell leaped into a dark room full of rebels. He asked his teammates to turn off the lights outside, and then entered a black screen for 15 seconds. You can understand it as Bell's ability to perceive and calculate the position of the enemy's chanting time. The more enemies there are, the longer the chanting time may be.
When I heard the gunshots again, it was actually Bell's killing moment. Under the flickering gunfire, Bell's image was looming, he almost did not move his position during the whole process, but inconceivably wiped out the enemy hiding in the dark. As if he had already calculated the position that was least likely to be hit.
This reminds me of the airplane games I played in the arcade machine room in my childhood, such as Caijing's 1945 series and CAVE's angry boss bee series. Experts can always shuttle freely through the bullets and take advantage of it by cleverness, but when it is their turn, they will be in a hurry, and they will die early.
I asked the master how you did it. What the master said to me was full of philosophy. He said that there are only two bullets in the world, one that can hit you, and the other that can't hit you.
After listening to it, I was taken aback, and he seemed to have said something, and he didn't seem to say anything.
It took me a long time to understand the meaning of this sentence.
When playing airplane games, you will see bullets full of screens, but not all bullets will hit your airplane, even if you stand still in one place, in fact, most of the bullets cannot be hit at all. yours. I have to admit that, more often, we hit the enemy's bullets ourselves.
So for a master, see through the rules of bullets and then avoid the deadly bullets.
After I was abandoned, I entered an airplane game again. Sure enough, I always died in the second level, now. I finally stopped the third level.
It is important to understand the truth, and it is also very important to turn the truth into practice.
second round
It was Bell who was blocked by soldiers from the church organization when he was preparing to release his pet dog.
The enemy changed from a rebel army to a soldier organized by the church. Bell was forced to make no choice but to make a move. His movements are not large, especially under his feet, there is almost no displacement. But his hands with the gun are absolutely not idle, changing various angles, aiming at the vital parts of the enemy.
At the same time, he has a strong body and can avoid the bullet chase every time he dodges. At such a close distance, the enemy repeatedly releases empty guns. Compared with Bell's agility, his opponent seemed to be still, and could not resist.
My understanding is that Bell has also entered the bullet time similar to that in The Matrix. After the time scale is adjusted to slow down, the protagonist’s ultra-fast speed seems to become an ordinary regular speed, while the surrounding world is all slower. , This also explains why the soldiers are all in a dumbfounded state.
In the end, Bell ended with a flight to the air. Although Via was full of sense, he was still very handsome.
Third scene
It was Bell's conscience that he let go of the rebel army at the den of the rebel army and started a fight with the church organization. It was also surrounded by groups, and it was also a helmet man facing a group of churches.
Bell still used his agile posture to move between the bullet and the enemy with ease, but this time the difference is that the bullet in Bell’s gun was lighted out for some reason, so he pressed the special button on the pistol. , Several nails protruded from under the handle of the gun. Under the hammer of the nails, the enemy's motorcycle helmet was smashed like tofu. Bell directly used the gun to get the church soldiers down. It can be said that being able to advance and retreat is a real magic weapon.
Fourth game
Bell changed into a white coat and went to the core area of the church to meet with the priest. But he didn't know that this was actually a trap. The villain died because of a lot of talk, and there is no exemption here. The church organization intimately explained the ins and outs of the whole thing clearly.
Under the tiger's lair in Longtan, Bell yelled, my fate was my fate. Two automatic pistols were copied from the sleeves, and all the people in the room were killed in seconds.
When you are watching a Shuang film, you often can't pay too much attention to some details. For example, the church clearly searched Bell and asked him to surrender his weapons, but Bell could easily take out the weapons and the magazines. With such sloppy security measures, I don't know whether the church didn't pay attention to Bell at all, or the moths in the organization finally exposed their corrupt nature.
Fifth scene
It is a classic corridor battle. This should also be the largest displacement of Bell's foot in this film.
I saw two rows of black guards standing neatly and uniformly on both sides of the corridor, holding submachine guns.
Bell's white clothes formed a sharp contrast with them, and there was no possibility of seeing him as his own.
But the moment Bell appeared, the church soldiers all just paid attention. As if they were really receiving guests who saw the priest.
The next step of Bell's operation was also unexpected. I saw him throw two grenades toward the middle of the corridor, but the grenades did not explode, and the black guard was so frightened that he almost thought it was a cigarette thrown by Bell. But what Bell threw in the past was not a grenade or a cigarette, but a two-shuttle magazine. The only function of these two shuttle magazines may be to satisfy the vanity that the action director thinks is cool.
Aside from these two shuttle magazines, Bell's action scene of shooting enemies on both sides of the corridor while charging is still quite cool. He solves two easily, two backhands, two more easily, and two backhands. After the action of filling ammunition was interspersed in the middle, the simple repetition seemed to have soul.
Waiting for him to get close to the magazine, Bell flipped forward and installed the two shuttle magazines thrown on the ground. Then he got up and cleared the field with Mark Pineapple's big move and ended the battle.
It may only take a few seconds to visually observe the entire process, because the soldiers fell to the ground almost at the same time.
Sixth
It was also the last spear fight, which was a one-on-one solo battle between Bell and the priest. There are actually two battles before, but because it was a katana duel, and Bell won with almost no effort, I won't repeat them.
Let's talk more about this final battle.
Bell's final opponent is the final villain of the priest as the vice chairman. A previous scene once described the vice-chairman as an instructor who trained new priests to learn "gun fighting". Therefore, his understanding of "gunfighting" should not be lower than Bell.
When the two first started fighting, they really fought to each other. Every time he shoots, he is successfully parried or dodged by the opponent.
Both of them are too familiar with "spear fighting technique" and too familiar with each other's tricks, so it is as if they are fighting with themselves. If things go on like this, a competition of technology will evolve into a competition of endurance.
But Bell did not agree. He changed his skills first and caught the priest by surprise. Using what Shaunbin had said, he replied to the priest and ended his sinful life. He also defended his position as the number one thug in the church.
The above is the gunfighting scene that has been repeatedly quoted and reproduced on the media platform. "Torn Doom" is also because the action scene is too eye-catching, and the real spiritual core is ignored.
Next, we put aside the elements of the action scene, to deeply analyze the core of this movie.
Dystopia
Libya, a city of miracles that has risen rapidly after the war, when the creatures outside the city were covered with charcoal and a scorched earth, Libya inside the city has created countless brilliant achievements.
Under the governance of the Jehovah Church, there are tall buildings, advanced technology, and the people live and work in peace and contentment. Most importantly, there is no war here.
Here is the legendary Utopia.
Utopia (Utopia), intended to be "a place does not exist" . Its origin comes from the book "Utopia" by Thomas More, the founder of Utopian Socialism. The full name of the book is very interesting. It is called "A Whole Book About the Most Perfect State System and the New Island of Utopia."
In the book, a fictitious navigator, Raphael, travels to a strange land and exotic country "Utopia".
There, property is publicly owned, the people are equal, and the principle of distribution according to needs is implemented. Everyone wears uniform work clothes and eats in public restaurants. Officials are elected by the public. In their view, private ownership is the root of all evil.
After a series of evolutions, Utopia has become synonymous with the most ideal society in human ideology.
Good, everyone is equal, no oppression, a paradise.
Dystopia is the opposite of an ideal society.
Dystopian society, on the surface of advanced technology, full of peace, and improved human living standards, but in essence it is an empty castle concealing weakness and hollowness, full of various uncontrollable maladies, such as class contradictions, shortage of resources, crime, and persecution. . It is an even more desperate future.
There are many dystopian works. The most famous ones are "Brave New World" by British Huxley, "Animal Farm" and "1984" by British George Orwell.
Many people associate "Torn Doom" with "1984".
If you have read the story of "1984", and then watch "Torn Doom", you will also be very impressed. Because they are two utopian worlds that are quite similar, as well as a dystopian story.
What "1984" depicts is also a totalitarian utopia.
In 1984, the number of countries in the world had been reduced to three. Oceania, Eurasia and East Asia, the novel starts from Oceania. The social structure of this country is a pyramid shape. The big brother at the top is omniscient and omnipotent, but he never shows up. Large pictures of him are posted indoors and outdoors. The piercing eyes stared at the subjects closely. "Torn Doom" is exactly the same.
Under Big Brother is the inner party with him as the leader, accounting for 2% of the country's population, and further down is the outer party, with ordinary people at the bottom, accounting for about 85% of the population.
"Torn Doom" also has a similar demographic structure.
However, the beliefs held by the utopias in "Torn Doom" and "1984" are not the same. The value of "Torn Doom" is to abandon human emotions to ensure the continuation of the species. In the values of "1984": "War is peace", "Freedom is slavery", and "Ignorance is power".
There are four departments in the organizational structure of "1984": the Ministry of Wealth, the Ministry of Peace, the Ministry of Charity and the Ministry of Truth. The Ministry of Wealth makes people go hungry, the Ministry of Peace is in charge of war, the Ministry of Humanity exercises strict ideological control over the masses, and the Ministry of Truth is responsible for spreading rumors.
Winston, the protagonist of the novel, is a small figure in the Ministry of Truth who is responsible for tampering with history. In this kind of work, he developed aversion to totalitarianism, aversion to control, aversion to the monitoring system that obliterates personality; the heroine Julia is also a member of the outer party, and out of a common aversion, they fall in love. Love saved their body and soul, and became their inner motivation to resist the anti-antibody system.
Finally, the "organization" discovered their behavior, and they were both arrested and imprisoned, where they were brainwashed. In the end, they betrayed their souls and loved ones, and the little human brilliance in their hearts was completely swallowed by the darkness of the system.
And in the utopia created by "Torn Doom", there is another picture. People began to receive continuous and high-intensity brainwashing education from the day they were born. They were told from an early age that all previous human slaughters and crimes were due to the existence of emotions, and history needs to be delicately linked by a clue. Epoch-making events have been distorted in their original meaning. As a pearl that anyone can play with, the truth and justice are no longer important. The important thing is who has the power to declare truth and justice.
In this beautiful new world composed of towering silver-gray buildings full of texture but exuding a sharp and cold atmosphere, human beings seem insignificant, and discipline and obedience are forced into their acquired consciousness.
Under the action of certain drugs, people gave up the ability to feel, and walked along the streets at a constant speed like walking dead all day long.
In the eyes of the church, not only people should not have emotions, but even anything that may trigger human emotions is not allowed. Yetz’s poems, Monalisa’s paintings, Beethoven’s symphony, these essences of human wisdom have become the dregs of human civilization and have been trampled underground. Because they are the fuse that indirectly triggers the war, because they are the source of human emotions.
There are three scenes that particularly touched me.
One is Bell wakes up from his sleep, and there is a patter of rain outside the window. The room Bell usually lives in is isolated from the outside world with opaque paper. Without inhibitors, Bell peeled off this layer of window paper. See the wonderful combination of sunshine, rain, rainbow, and the city outside.
The fierce chemical reaction exploded in Bell's body, and there was something that he had never had before pouring into Bell's heart. This kind of thing was called feeling.
Bell hurriedly found the inhibitor to inject it into his body. At this time, in the mirror, Bell saw himself holding the inhibitor, which was basically a standard suicide gesture.
In another scene, Bell enters the basement of a resister. There is a room full of artworks and a record player. When he accidentally moved the stylus, Beethoven’s symphony cut through the air. Bell never showed expression. His face began to twist, he couldn't control his lacrimal glands, he couldn't control his body. For the first time, he knew that something like music could get into people's hearts so easily after it had crossed the line of defense of the eardrum.
The third scene is Bell looking through the video data when his wife was sentenced to death. On the screen, facing his wife who was about to say goodbye to him, there was no expression on his face. Bell slumped on the chair and couldn't believe that the owner of the cold face on the screen was himself.
Bell deeply realized what the female emotional prisoner told him, that there is no emotion, and breathing is just the pendulum of time.
Facts have proved that the church’s step-by-step calculations are indeed very reasonable, because human feelings are a weapon that is more powerful than anything else.
As expected, the church organization was finally defeated by human feelings.
Relationship with the spirit cage
I actually watched "Torn Doom" a long time ago, but recently picked it up again because of a very popular national comic-"Ling Cage".
I don't know if "Spirit Cage" has ever drew inspiration from "Torn Doom", but some of the settings of the two are indeed surprisingly similar.
Human emotions have become a stumbling block that hinders human survival.
And a religious force has become the nominal savior of mankind.
The Lord in "The Torn Doom", the lord of light and shadow in "Spirit Cage", and the way of survival in the last days seem to always teach people to abandon humanity and pursue divinity.
However, there is no fish when the water is clear. The so-called divinity is nothing but another form of humanity.
As the priest said frankly in the end, he has always had feelings.
I believe he did not lie on this issue. If there is no emotion, how can you do such a ridiculous thing?
The meaning of the title Equilibrium
The Chinese name of the movie is "The Torn Doom". In fact, I still have some surprises. The name neither conforms to the meaning of the English literal translation, nor does it conform to the plot of the movie.
The English title Equilibrium, literally translated means balance, or the ability to maintain balance. Just looking at this literal translation, the correlation with the plot is actually quite big. For people, being too emotional or not being emotional at all is not the final answer.
War may indeed have a great relationship with people's emotions, but the absence of emotion does not mean that there is no dispute.
Balance is the best decision for natural reconciliation. And possessing both the stunts of the ruthless and the feelings of ordinary people, it seems that Bell has the ability to maintain balance and becomes the key to two boats.
The Equilibrium in the movie actually meant the building where the priest's video was played all day long and people came and went. If you accidentally lose the "emotion inhibitor", you must go to this building to register and reissue it.
People call this building the center of balance. In Libya, inhibitors are peace regulators.
But obviously, the peace adjusted in this way has not created a beautiful utopia for people. At least, it's not a utopia for everyone.
At the end of the film, the church is overthrown, and sentimentalism is bound to become the mainstream of the new dynasty. So, will peace follow?
Not necessarily, the prescription for peace is actually written in the English title of the movie-the ability to balance.
It was also written in the poem of Yates read by Sean Bin before his death--
"You always know, and I'm alone
Leave my dreams for nothing, unfold the wings of dreams under your feet
Step gently
Because you are stepping on the wings of my dream"
If someone stands on the wings of my dreams, I will overturn them to the ground.
