It can be said that this movie is the culmination of all the problems that DC has had in the past few years. Group portraits are a mess, and feminism is also a mess.
First of all, it definitely made a very alive Harley Quinn, and Margot Robbie gave one of the best performances I've ever seen. But the movie did make the rest of the group portraits mediocre, with no memory, which is more enjoyable than the Wonder Woman in Zhenglian. The film uses a very large amount of space to depict the past of the rest of the Birds of Prey team, the mother of the black canary, the family of the huntress, the career of the sheriff and the childhood of Cain. However, their similar and different experiences did not create any distinguishing points in their characters from others. They all seemed to wear a unified mask with hatred and independence written on it. The indistinct character of the characters leads the whole Birds of Prey team to give us the feeling that Harley Quinn and her sisters, everything the sisters do is like an NPC, with blurred faces.
Secondly, DC's films express feminist ideas like a primary school student, who always likes to prove women's abilities to men in order to gain a sense of identity. And this sense of identity basically comes from violence, as if to say that as long as I win a man, I will be a strong man. This is very wrong. We always use the rules of the game for men to judge winners and losers, but in fact, the real feminism is never to prove something to others, nor to win or lose the game. This is still a manifestation of not breaking away from patriarchy. Due to physiological reasons, men and women naturally have differences in strength. When will they learn to admit this difference and confidently show the brilliance of women on the premise of understanding this difference, when will feminist films truly become independent? When a film no longer revolves around a male, whether the male is the object of comparison or the villain, that is a qualified feminist film.
I have always liked DC and other superheroes just like this kind of black tone storytelling. This time, the Birds of Prey team continued to use this black tone, but in terms of texture, it was very different from several other DC movies. I don't know if this difference is due to the director's lack of camera control or a real lack of money, but the violent aesthetic texture of a movie is not even as good as the American drama Gotham, which really makes people feel completely deceived.
In the end, I give three stars because I support this attempt to make a superhero group portrait, and I hope there will be more films that are truly female, no matter what kind of film it is.
I unknowingly said too much. I am also deeply responsible for my love for DC. Although every time I shouted that selling discs and China are going to go bankrupt, I really like Warner's style and I really hope It can go further and further in a benign direction.
