Gerard Depardieu as a priest!

Many people will say this movie is boring. Indeed, a story of a priest and Satan's soul struggle would not be appealing. Religious themes are very unfamiliar to the Chinese. The film is very simple. It is believed that the ascetic priest met Satan and thus gained the ability to see evil. At the same time, I understand the true meaning of religion, and the virtues of the truly pious priests are not tolerated by the secular world. The secular church also failed to understand the frenzied redemptive actions of the priests, who were eventually sent to remote suburbs. However, the devout priest did not give in, and bravely used his life to complete his loyalty to the faith in the face of Satan's challenge.
I don't believe in religion, but respect all devout people. Many people criticized the film for being too esoteric, or too heavy. This can only prove that the director is very successful, the desolate rural landscape, the worldly crimes, the pain of the betrayer, the piety and confusion of the priest, the cowardice of the bishop, the hypocrisy of the church, all to set off the ultimate simple act of dedication. The indomitable spirit of a little priest is no less than Braveheart.
What surprised me was that Gerard Depardieu was starring in this film. I'm used to seeing him as a tough guy, or a romantic lover. I really didn't expect him to be able to act in such a serious religious film.

Under the Sun of Satan quotes

  • Donissan: God is mocking me.

  • [first lines]

Donissan: With you, everything looks easy. Alone, I'm useless. I'm like the zero, only useful next to other numbers. Priests are so miserable. They waste their lives seeing God being ignored. People make jokes on us. We're like those walls where people write obscenities.

    Menou-Segrais: You're tired.

Donissan: Tired? I'm not tired. Tired is a bad thought.

    Menou-Segrais: Suspend your visits.

Donissan: Those visits do more harm than good. In the beginning, I didn't know evil. I learned it from the mouths of the sinners.

Menou-Segrais: No one knows better than a priest about the terrible monotony of sin.

Donissan: I can't speak to them. I can't only make absolutions and feel sorry.

Menou-Segrais: If one absolution in thirty was worthy, the world would be brief.
