Hello everyone, I'm Sheng Sheng Buxi.

Summer is so suitable for love.

Those hidden secrets and repressed thoughts are quietly growing in the warm and humid weather.

In the season of strong hormones, men and women can hold together with one glance, hook their fingers, and the story happens.

Before the confession, every eye contact, there is an ambiguous feeling and desire to say no.

In this regard, women are inherently delicate.

When a relationship occurs between two women, there is always more tenderness.

And when a film is born, from the author, to the actors, to the director, and the screenwriter are all women, the delicacy and poetry it presents can simply melt your heart.

There aren't many LGBT movies I've seen.

Besides Brokeback Mountain and Call Me By Your Name, Tell the Bees is the third, although I would prefer to classify it as a romance movie.

After all, love is never only about heartbeat, not gender.

01

In the summer of 1952 in a small Scottish town, the air was always wet.

The young female doctor Jane returned to the old house, ready to take over the mantle of her father.

Jane was a rare intellectual woman in that era, with a wealthy family and the elegance that a lady should have.

She returned from her studies in the outside world and returned to this isolated town, trying to do something for the people there.

Jane carries a medicine box with her, and is the only female doctor in the town, and the only doctor.

Lydia is not the same as Jane. She is unrestrained and enthusiastic, and she loves to drink and dance.

At the ball, Lydia painted her red lips like a delicate rose, and her dancing waist drew the eyes of all men.

She met a man at a ball in Manchester, tall and handsome, with a touch of dominance in his tenderness.

The flames of love snapped, lighting up the sky she longed to be loved.

Lydia is brave and special.

Their love was not favored by her father, but she still fell in love with him unswervingly. After finding out that she was pregnant, she resolutely followed the man to the town, even though she was unknown at the time.

02

Under the perennial hazy sky of the town, the direction of the story is always sad.

After Lydia married a man, her husband went to the front line and came back from retirement. She was no longer as fresh as before.

He rarely returns home, leaving his wife in an old rented house and raising his son alone on a meager salary from the factory.

Until one day, Lydia heard that her husband had cheated on her with a young woman who was as gorgeous as she was.

She said to her husband, who went home to pack his bags:

Charlie and I are going to be kicked out by the landlord.

The man who once rubbed her ears, once told her all the love in the world, but now, he just responded lightly:

You have to learn how to take care of yourself, and your son.

He was so heartless that he didn't even want to recognize his son.

Lydia's vitality, enthusiasm, all faded.

She mustered up the courage to write a letter to her broken-hearted father for help, but was called back by her father.

The disappointments in life are simply overwhelming.

When you think it's hard enough, life can always silently smash a new pit and tell you:

Who said it, it can be even more bitter.

Lydia was unable to concentrate on her work, which resulted in a small production accident and lost her job.

She fled from the factory shaking her body, lit a cigarette tremblingly, and her emotions gradually calmed down from anger, grievance, and helplessness.

Finally, she took a deep breath and let out a self-deprecating sneer:

fuck it.

To be honest, the heroine's acting skills here are amazing.

The emotions progressed layer by layer, perfectly combining Lydia's weakness with her stubbornness in her bones, making people more and more agree that such a beautiful and arrogant woman will not be reduced to vulgarity because of the suppression of the world.

On the other hand, Jane's medical career was not smooth.

She treats her patients with all her might, but people don't seem to buy it.

A mother who went to school with her said:

I don't need you to teach me how to take care of my daughter.

Although at that time, her daughter had contracted the disease, and Jane had just arrived with a medicine chest and carefully examined the girl.

As Lydia and Jane said in their first chat:

People in this place also need to get used to the presence of female doctors, which is a bit ahead of their time for them.

Later, due to the ignorance of the mother, the best treatment period for her daughter was delayed.

When Jane drove over, she saw only a small, lifeless body.

Jane blamed herself very much. She hated herself for not being able to come earlier, and hating herself for not being able to dispel the stereotypes that permeated the town—

The woman who suffered from gynecological disease because of childbirth, obviously had money to treat the disease, but because the doctor at the time was Jane's father, she endured it for ten years.

The women in the town are quiet and forbearing.

They are accustomed to accept it, and use traditional concepts to bind themselves firmly. If anyone dares to go beyond it, it will become the target of everyone's scorn.

03

When Jane and Lydia met, they couldn't show each other a decent appearance.

One of them became pregnant out of wedlock, and then was tragically abandoned.

The two lonely souls met, and after a few words, they found out that the other party turned out to be a bosom friend.

When Lydia was kicked out by the landlord, Jane looked at her seriously and said:

this is not your fault.

And when Lydia learned that Jane couldn't save the poor girl, she didn't say anything, but gave her a powerful hug.

They don't get along much, but in such delicate contact, they can feel each other's love and understanding.

Jane took in their mother and son and made Lydia the housekeeper of her old house.

Charlie is so happy that he can finally see bees every day in the doctor's back garden.

In the film, Bee and Charlie are the same story line, which is endowed with absolute poetry by the director.

The buzzing sound of bees is like a human whisper, and the English name is honey, with a sweet romance.

The special upbringing environment from childhood made Charlie a sensitive and delicate little boy.

He would ignore his mother's tears wisely, turn on the music, and invite her to a cheerful dance.

Charlie sees too many unknown secrets in the town.

Some he didn't understand yet, but others made him understand how his parents were different from others.

Jane once told Charlie that her father told herself that if you tell the secret to the bees, they won't fly away.

So Charlie went to talk to the bees every day, telling them about his confusion.

He said:

Mom has been sullen.

Charlie was terrified when he saw Lydia and Jane kissing in the room.

I am afraid that my mother is a "disgusting homosexual" in other people's mouths, and I am afraid that she has more secrets to hide from herself——

They made it clear that they wanted to be honest with each other.

However, Mom is still the outlier in the town.

People pass by and spit in disgust, even though they don't even know each other.

The mother-son reconciliation scene is the highlight of the film.

Lydia reassured her son and told him softly but firmly:

Secrets are not the same as lies, you can't know me like the back of your hand. I love her a lot, but I'm still your mom and nothing has changed.

She is telling Charlie in her own way that everyone can make their own choices in life without hurting others.

Did Charlie get it?

I think it must be.

04

The film's most striking visual sequence is the montage of the two simultaneous conflicts.

On this side, Lydia's husband raped her rudely.

The machismo inscribed in his bones tells him that a man can not love his wife, but she can't love others behind your back, especially, the other party is actually a woman.

This is a double blow to his reputation and face, and a great disgrace to his life.

He wants to possess her to declare his sovereignty.

On the other side, the heroine's cousin was pregnant out of wedlock and was forced to have an abortion by her mother.

She lay on the bed screaming mournfully, gurgling blood from her lower body, and almost lost half her life.

Jane, who came in a hurry, told her mother that the medical environment at home was too rudimentary, and her cousin needed to go to a regular hospital for follow-up treatment.

But what else could it be?

The mother's silence made Jane understand that the persuasion at this time was all in vain.

She began to urgently stop the bleeding for her cousin, and a depressing atmosphere filled the room.

In the end, Charlie chose to help the bee to rescue the mother who was abused by her father.

In the bees flying all over the sky, the mother and son dance happily together, like a fairy tale full of elves.

On the other side, the mother who almost lost her daughter finally held Jane's hand sincerely and expressed her unparalleled gratitude in her heart.

None of them changed, and they held on to their inner softness and kindness, and finally won a place in the town for themselves.

In the most difficult days, they inspired each other with love, and finally achieved each other.

Later, Lydia decides to leave the town with Charlie.

She needs a wider world to provide Charlie with a more hopeful life.

Jane made an agreement with her that she would go to them when she was done with some of the things at hand.

But in fact, they knew each other well, this time they parted, they would meet again indefinitely.

For them, one cannot stay in this town, and the other cannot leave.

It was introduced at the beginning of the film that after her father died, Jane was the only doctor in the town.

Although the people here are old-fashioned and cold-hearted, Jane just can't leave them alone.

Doctors are benevolent, and life should not be dominated by prejudice.

The affectionate kiss that no one else was on the platform was so dazzling.

It has nothing to do with lust, it is the entanglement of soul and soul.

How fortunate, they met in the darkest days, supported each other with pure love, and finally survived to the day when the clouds and the sun came out.

05

A lot of times, the story always has to leave regrets, and it is impossible to have both love and support.

But so what?

You meet someone and you fall in love with someone.

TA drives away the haze above your head and tells you that life is still sunny.

There are blooming flowers, endless vitality, and tenderness between people.

TA took you through a journey, and when we parted, you have transformed into a better version of yourself.

Gao Xiaosong once used an analogy, and that is the most beautiful reverberation about love I have ever heard:

You are the star, and I am the star next to you. My entire trajectory is influenced by you, even if one day this star goes out, it becomes dark matter, it becomes invisible, it still affects my trajectory. Your presence changes my star path forever, no matter where you are.

Yes, as long as there is love and kindness in life, life will always be better.

Just like at the end of the film, the grown-up Charlie left softly:

The rush for change even reached that small town, and though it was quiet and subtle, neither Mom nor Jane could hear it, but I could still hear the echo. And we all will usher in a brighter future.
