Meet you in a parallel world

In 2009, I just brushed this drama for no reason, but left it to 2021 to write drama reviews. I liked it when I watched it, I liked time travel, I liked retro, I liked John Simm's unique temperament... Although I liked it, I have to admit that I didn't understand it at all. So the second brush is a brand new experience for me, I understand the world better, and re-understand this drama.

Sam Tyler is a young man with a bright and beautiful life in the 21st century. He is young and promising. He became the chief inspector of DIC in his thirties. He lives in a modern high-end apartment and has a smart, beautiful and loving girlfriend. what! But a case changes all that. Sam and his girlfriend Maya, who is also a police detective, have a disagreement in the process of hunting down a serial killer. Maya has disappeared and may have been killed in the process of stalking the prisoner alone. When Sam was in pain and despair, a sudden car accident made him travel back to 1973 in a second!

The most amazing thing is that Sam in 1973 actually had a very similar identity to that in 2006. He was a policeman who had just been transferred from Hyde Branch, so Sam seamlessly integrated into the world of 1973. His Boss Hunt is a typical policeman in the 1970s, unruly and carefree, a "big old man" as we say; a group of colleagues in the police station, some like him and some don't like him; only the WPC policewoman (at that time) It should be regarded as a new thing) Annie accepted Sam from the beginning, and in the later days, Annie also became that light in Sam's life.

The biggest controversy in this show is that in the 1973 where Sam is located, did he really travel back to 1973 through time and space? Or was it just his imagination when he fell into a coma after a car accident in 2006? When I read it for the first time more than ten years ago, I still didn't understand it, or I didn't understand it. If Sam was just in a coma, there seemed to be a lot of things that were hard to explain. This time, I think I have a new explanation. That is: In 2006, Sam had a car accident and fell into a coma; but at the same time his soul traveled to a parallel world in 1973, and in this world, there was also a Sam Tyler, and for some reason he succeeded the original Sam. Tyler is alive in this world (although from this perspective, it is more reasonable to fall into a coma) Why? I think it's because the story was originally created by the writer's deep consciousness (Sam's subconscious). In a way, Sam must be a projection of the creator himself.

Why did Sam go back to 1973? The biggest reason is his father! In the back story, Sam's life experience is explained. His father left home when he was four years old and never came back. The absence of the father's role has had an indelible impact on Sam's life! It can be said that it is the pain in his soul, the biggest trauma. And 1973, happened to be, belonged to his father's era. In my opinion, Sam came back here because he wanted to reconnect with his father, and he wanted to see what his father's world was like. That is to go back to the original point and try to heal yourself by repairing this trauma, or rather, find yourself!

That's right! Sam went back to 1973, and the real purpose was to find himself! In 2006, Sam, who seemed to have a perfect life and lacked everything, has always been incomplete, but all these problems were buried in the depths until Maya's death became the fuse and lost Maya. Sam finds out that he is completely lost in that world! So he wanted to leave, he wanted to go to a place he wanted to go, and that was 1973! He wants to live again!

In 1973, there was a person who was very important to Sam, and this person was Hunt, which I didn't understand at all when I watched it for the first time. Hunt was created by Sam's subconscious, which is the consciousness of the playwright, so why did Sam create such a character? I think the answer should be that there is such a character in the real life of the playwright! He is a man who has a crucial influence on the playwright, and from the author's role setting for him (he is Sam's superior, his Boss), this man should be an elder, because His power is above Sam, and his relationship with Sam is very close, so I guess this person is a male relative of the author in reality, stepfather, uncle, uncle... It is possible that he raised the author, or At least participated in the author's growth and became a person who is extremely important to him, a male role model in his growth! But although their relationship is close in heart, they are incompatible in daily life. They are like the positive and negative ends of an electrode, looking at each other unhappy, but despite this, they are actually a perfect team, a complementary existence, and regardless of Hunt No matter how he swears, he is very kind of Sam, and he always listens to Sam’s words later, and usually he is always supporting Sam, and the two have become inseparable partners (reminds me of the phrase “father and son” are inseparable in battle. ) So, he actually fills the role of father! And there is nothing a son desires more than wanting to know what his father was like.

If Hunt is a projection of Sam (the author) wanting to connect with his father, then a group of colleagues in the police department is a projection of the male group. Psychologically speaking, a boy who lacks the role of his father since childhood will be extremely eager for the acceptance of the male group when he grows up, because he lacks the identification of a strong father role (a symbol of male absolute power) since he was a child, so he grows up to become a kind of "" missing". Throughout the story, Sam was rejected and ridiculed by everyone from the very beginning, then was accepted and proved himself, until he was truly accepted and loved by the group, which is exactly the process of a male growing up. Maybe Sam in 2006 didn't do it, so there's a story of going back to 1973 to do it! Here Sam finally found a sense of belonging!

The second important role in 1973 was Annie Annie. This role is very interesting. To a certain extent, we can understand that her appearance is Sam's compensation for the pain of losing Maya, because she, like Maya, is also an actress. Policewoman, there is a very interesting story setting here: Sam in 2006 completely ignored Maya's opinion when handling the case, and acted his own way, which finally caused a tragedy. That is to say, the loss of Maya was caused by Sam's own mistakes. It can be understood that he does not know how to listen, or respect Maya's feelings and thoughts. , One of the reasons behind this is not enough respect and not enough attention! Because only when you respect a person will you pay attention to his every thought and listen to every word she says. vice versa! In reality, the author lost his girlfriend because he didn't consider the other party's feelings, and he didn't respect the other party's ideas enough. So in 1973, it all made up for it! In 1973, Annie was also a little policewoman who was not taken seriously. The male policemen beside her were joking and staring at her obsessively. They didn't respect her, let alone take them seriously! And Annie deserves to be respected and valued, so Sam insisted on listening to Annie's ideas from the very beginning. He always asked Annie "What do you think?" This can be seen that the author (Sam) realized his last paragraph. The reason for the failed relationship, he grew up! Here, he began to learn to respect each other's ideas, began to value her, and regarded her as an existence as important as the male police officers around him, instead of ignoring her. It can be seen from this point that the author's intention is that Annie is the projection of Sam's lover from the very beginning!

But at the same time, Annie is Annie, Maya is Maya, and the two women have nothing in common other than their profession! This also shows that Annie is not a substitute for Maya! Instead, she's a whole new being! The story here is a bit like the bridge between the ex-girlfriend and the current girlfriend! Annie has been in love with Sam from the very beginning, but Sam has always been ambiguous. I can't figure out whether Sam likes Annie or not! Until I saw the episode where Sam was overdose, when he saw Annie on TV, he couldn't help touching her face across the screen. Many things can be faked, but this moment is absolutely true! At this point I thought that Sam really liked Annie, or even more than that, even though he didn't realize that he might have fallen in love with Annie. And the real reason why he has been slow to take a step forward is because his heart is still erratic, he feels that everything here is not true, 2006 is! What's more, he can't let go of Maya (and the past memories). Until Maya said to him, "let me go" this episode, we can only truly embrace everything in the present until we truly let go of our past relationships! Sam put down Maya and walked towards Annie!

A big reason for Sam's many personality flaws is his family of origin trauma: the loss of his father! So in 1973 (the year his father left), Sam met his father and learned the truth about him! This is also an important step in a person's growth: see the limitations of parents! Sam made up for his childhood regrets and played football with his dad for a while! Although he failed to change his fate, the story ends here, indicating that he has reconciled with his father.

This can also explain why in the end, Sam chose to stay in 1973, because here, he truly completed the growth and fulfillment of his life, he made up for all the missing, he solved all the regrets, and he found his life The last piece of the puzzle!

About the finale: I think there are two explanations: 1. Sam woke up from a coma and returned to 2006, but he found that he didn't feel "alive" here, so he understood that his real destination was in 1973! But there is another explanation, that is, he has traveled to 1973 in parallel time and space. During the shootout, he entered his subconscious, that is, imagination, which is the second layer of dreams in Inception. This time, he returned to 2006. It's a projection from his inner longing (because he's still thinking about 2006), and that's why Sam doesn't feel anything here! Could also explain why many of the key stories here are not explained at all, like what happened to Maya? What happened to the case? There is absolutely no follow-up! Because Sam has already solved those problems subconsciously, so this time back, he just wants to say a final goodbye to the past! So he met his mother, his only attachment in that world, and completed the last chapter! And then Sam knew it was all fake and unreal, so he made the last jump without hesitation (without fear of falling to his death)!

Life on Mars quotes

  • Sam Tyler: [credits introduction] My name is Sam Tyler. I had an accident, and I woke up in 1973. Am I mad, in a coma, or back in time? Whatever's happened, it's like I've landed on a different planet. Now, maybe if I can work out the reason, I can get home.
