Endo Samurai Sheng Yuan has the traditional virtues of loyalty and perseverance. He can risk his life to rescue Watanabe Watanabe's wife, Kasao, who is also loyal to the royal family. But attachment is one of the three major sins in Buddhism (distinction, delusion, and attachment). Unfortunately, Sheng Yuan's excessive attachment is due to this and cannot extricate himself. His obsession and greed for Jia Su, a married woman, went so far as to kill her entire family in order to marry her. In the end, he forced Jia Su to sacrifice her own life in order to save her husband and grandmother. And Jia Su's husband is a modest gentleman who is unwilling to kill. He did not choose revenge, but let Sheng Yuan return to Buddhism and introspect.

The front of the film seems to be a traditional routine of dog blood, but the final theme sublimation is very successful.

Attracted by the posters and stills, it didn't disappoint me, but it always reminded me of Daming Palace's words~~~~~~・・It feels like a stage play

It is rare for Japan to be able to make such a color film after a few years of defeat. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Although Sheng Yuan is very loyal to his master and even doesn't recognize his rebellious brother, he is blinded by love, hot-headed, stubborn, possessive, and short-tempered. Sheng Yuan knew of manslaughter and wanted to kill himself. Du said that people could not be resurrected from the dead, so Sheng Yuan cut off his hair and became a monk.

Gate of Hell quotes

  • Kesa: [after Moritoo grabs her in a strong embrace] What are you doing?

Moritoo Endô: You refuse no matter what?

    Kesa: Yes.

Moritoo Endô: Then I'm ready. You're mine now!

Kesa: No matter what you say, female virtue won't allow it.

Moritoo Endô: Drop your husband. Leave Wataru.

    Kesa: I can't do that.

Moritoo Endô: Why can't you? I, Moritoo, will slay Wataru. I won't stop with Wataru. If needed, your aunt too. I might have to kill you too!

Kesa: [the camera moves in for an intense close-up of Kesa] Are you ready to do all that? Do you want me that much?

Moritoo Endô: I want you. I can't live without you. What do you say? Can't you grant my wish? Eh? Why don't you answer? Do you want Wataru, yourself, and your aunt all dead? Kesa! It all depends on your answer now.

  • Moritoo Endô: [to Kesa's aunt] If you take a step outside tonight, I'll lop off your head!
